Then I stand corrected.

I put that down to my changing (ageing) sense of taste.
Out of curiosity I recently had a go at making crisp myself, a few weeks ago.
The proved to be much tastier than the commercial ones, though they would not
keep for any time at all. I just used one of those floating blade type potato
peelers to shave the crisps, then straight into the hot fat for a minute or
two.
