A Progress Report

I have fudged an answer to the 'blocked passageway' puzzle from DK2ZA.
Helmut asked "How broad is the passageway" in his diagram.

Imagine plank b rotated to a vertical position on the right hand house wall.
This gives a right angle triangle (plank 'a', plank 'b', and ground 'width').
Now, add 2m to each dimension, and you get a 5, 4, 3 right angle triangle.

So, 'a' = 3 + 2 = 5, 'b' = 2 + 2 = 4, and 'w' = w + 2 = 3

Therefore, if w + 2 = 3, w must = 1.  This is, of course, trickery!
And a diagram drawn to scale, say, 1/10th, will show an error but also the
approximate answer.

Who can get a better fit, using reverse engineering, or mathematical method?
