I own an old single cylinder 4-stroke motorcycle (moto Guzzi NF-500).
it is extremely difficult to find certain spare parts.
one part that is not available anymore is the mechanical automatic retarder
for the ignition. in time the small springs lose their strength and than the
exact ignition timing at higher revs is lost.

I think it must be possible to make an electronic device that can be
programmed to give the correct ignition time with each revolution speed of
the engine. I however have no information on existing devices.
do they get their information from one or more triggerpulses during each
revolution ? I would of course like to make a unit that is as simple as
possible so I do not have to modify too much in the existing system.
preferrably I exchange the mechanical automatic advancer (sorry, not a
retarder)
with a simple disc in which I drill a hole that marks one revolution.
detection can be by light or magnetic induction giving the trigger for the
calculation of the ignition timing.
this calculation can either be done analoguous or digital.
I have no clue how to solve this.
is there anyone who has experience on this subject ??
