Hi Allan and readers,
I got a bit of a chuckle from that article on that "new" wing warping
technology because I was thinking of birds. Mechanical birds are
legendary and ancient technology using this "new" stuff long before the
Wright brothers got the Wright idea from the birds, warping the wings.
Today's mechanical birds and bugs (a facinating scientific study BTW)
warp every part of the machine in order to fly, so maybe Lockheed-Marin
should stick to making mechanical skunks? (A slick reference to The Skunk
Works.)
Birds in flight warp every part of the body under varying conditions
which allows certain raptors to dive on their prey at speeds in excess of
200MPH and other species to fly at altitude greater than 30,000 feet.
Somehow I think the boffins at NASA should scrap the computers and take
up bird watching. (;->)
No, that's not a jibe, I'm deadly serious while out the other side of my
mouth making a funny. That article only touches on how flight seems to be
getting back to it's roots after a long period of thinking that Man knew
better than what the birds knew all along.
Hmmmm, I can just picture a giant silver eagle diving into the ocean and
coming up with a submarine in it's talons. Funny? OK, go ahead and laugh!
They laughed at Jules Verne and his nuclear powered Nautilus until the US
Navy built one and named it NAUTILUS!
