Hello John and readers,
That's a very good construction article, but needlessly complex. I have
seen others which don't require the timer chip, but rather use feedback
windings on the torroid. Just the same it's good simply because torroids
are difficult to wind by hand and getting the multiple windings right is
a bit tricky. I know, I have both hand and machine wound them. BTW,
winding the HV secondary by hand would take forever, even solenoid
winding the secondary of a Tesla coil is a hair puller, that I found out
too. (;->)
One other thing that's very important and well worth mentioning is using
one for emergency backup lighting in the shack as I do. These things
"sing" all over the HF spectrum and because they're not frequency
controlled the birdies wander all over the place. You may get lucky and
then you just may have one of those birds lay an egg right on top of that
emergency net you're handling traffic for.
Now the beauty of the beast is the harmonics fade rapidly with increasing
frequency and don't bother VHF at all. I have no problems working
stations on and above 6M when the lights go out as they do once in a
while here at the Jersey Shore when the power supply suffers from summer
air conditioner overload.
