All engines use a little oil....
It is just not measurable with sufficient accuracy between oil changes.
Oil is passed by the piston rings, the valve stem seals and by the many
other seals such as the one behind the flywheel. The crankcase breather
is only intended to allow the crankcase pressure to equalise with the
atmosphere, but as an engine becomes worn they tend to be used more and
more due to piston blow by and pass a great deal of burnt oil fumes back
into the combustion chambers. Lift the oil filler cap and you can often
smell the burnt oil and see the fumes in a worn engine.
I check my oil level with the car still in my garage after it has stood
level for at least eight hours, as the most accurate way to check it. My
engine has now done 126K and I can detect no drop in level between
services.
Over filling with oil can be as bad as not putting enough in. The space
above the oil is intended to act as a buffer for the motion of the
pistons. Reduce the size of this buffer zone and you may find the
additional pressure causes early failure of the crank shaft and timing
case oil seals.
