Agreeing with what was expressed;

Call me old-fashioned or maybe just plain wrong, but
the domain file is for ampr.org. nes pas?
Anything on the left-hand side is $origin ampr.org.
so...

joe.blow. IN A 10.10.10.4
joe.blow.com IN MX 10 joe.blow.ampr.org.
joe.blow.com. IN MX 20 joe.blow.co.uk.
blow.joe.co.uk IN MX 30 blow.ampr.org.

and the like,, are good examples of how it isn't done
but frequently is.

The file is the primary reference point for many
and yet cannot be totally accurate except perhaps for
an instant. Are there any recent safeguards against
people making a hash of it? no pun intended.

Anything anywhere is $ORIGIN AMPR.ORG, regardless of whether it appears on the
left or the right side. If you want to point to an MX not in AMPR.ORG, then
the right side must use a fully-qualified name ending with an explicit dot.
There is no point to using a domain on the left not in AMPR.ORG, since this
will not work within the AMPR.ORG zone of authority.

Yes. Every time someone finds a new mistake that gets past the filters,
I add more. It's far from foolproof, but it does catch some common mistakes.

Which highlights something I think important: when you think you've buggered
the database, tell Brian right away. Don't wait for him to spend time just
figuring out someone buggered it later on, much less fixing it.

I'd have preferred you not to shout at me, quoting the part of my message
that suited your stance.

*I* do not want to use non "AMPR.ORG" addresses in the file, thanks.

This fixing of buggering is what brought my comment (misunderstood by
some respondents) to the surface. It gets bloody tedious taking out the
same old clinkers and variations thereon. I just posted a few examples
is all.

That was not intended as shouting, but all caps in considered proper style in
decribing domains, since they are not case sensitive. See any of the RFCs,
for
example, which always use all caps for domains.

I was already aware of the RFC proper style and I didn't misuse the said
proper style, as further reference to my original message will show.

Reference to the master file at ucsd will show that my usage of a
particular term was correct, and also correct in it's context.
