Naw, we've already tried the "new young blood" deal when we lowered our
standards so that we could flood our ranks with "communicators". At that
point, the average intelligence, dedication, and educational level of hams
took a nose-dive. Much of our present stagnation stems from this error
alone.
Think it was bad before? It's worse now. -- I doubt another flood of
semi-ham "communicators" will do much to improve the situation. To be
realistic, we can only expect more "new young blood" to further contribute
to the
"dumbing down" of amateur radio, with our present setup..
These days it's not just that we have "appliance operators" in our ranks..
Now we have "challenged appliance operators" who are terrified to try to
learn how to use a new "appliance" - It's too complicated for them. Thanks,
ARRL !!
For my part, I'd be willing to see a decline in the *quantity* of hams,
knowing that in such situations the "weak" will be the first to fall along
the way. In the aftermath of such an event, we would have a smaller,
smarter, more dedicated amateur radio population, particularly if we raise
our standards for new hams up above "rock bottom" once again.
Some hams believe that the ARRL's "communicator" deal was a waste of time,
but I disagree.. Now we know beyond doubt that we do NOT want quantity at
the expense of quality. For a technological brotherhood such as amateur
radio such a move is pure disaster, and the proof of that is currently
being "rubbed in good" so that perhaps later on we won't forget.
I think we should be very happy that the Internet is there, providing a
"direction" for unhappy semi-hams who want to leave amateur radio. Now we
know where to tell them to go, and they have a place to migrate off to
which will not 'challenge" them so much.
EVERYBODY's happy!

Subject: I need a TCP/IP address assigned
I am looking to get a TCP/IP address assigned. I have sent mail to the
last person I knew to be the area coordinator for the North Texas/Dallas
area (Eric Martin) and have received no response over the last 4 weeks.
Is Eric still the right contact? Does he have a new email address? (I
have elmartin@unt.edu)
What else can I do?

I propose that we set a goal of transitioning to IPv6 by Jan 1 2001.
That's only 5 years away. Do you think we can do it?

The UK cable companies want to put 30 million addresses on the net by 1999
so I guess we'll need to keep up. Anyone have an IPv6 over AX.25 draft
yet ?
