Actually you need more than just KISS. Here's the big picture:
IP<->AX.25<->KISS<->Serial
|
ARP
The two parts you're missing is the AX.25 and KISS code. You could use
the
stock serial library that comes with windows, and send a signal on each
KISS
frame boundary. The next level (KISS) listens for frame signals from
the
Serial code and de-frames the contents, before passing it on to the
AX.25/IP
protocol converter. The data at this point has the TCP/IP data packet
encapsulated in AX.25, which is a minor protocol with ASCII callsigns
rather
than binary addresses. To get to/from IP you need a little ARP table
that
associates callsigns with IP addresses. Then strip the AX.25 and send
the
resulting IP packet to windows. Here it would be useful to use a VxD to
make
the interface to the windows network base.
I'd suggest you look at JNOS for the KISS and LAPB (AX.25) code, as JNOS
LAPB
has been gone through with a fine tooth comb by people who use it
everyday. It
is probably the most accurate protocol implementation (not that it needs
to be
that accurate). Seperate out the LAPB, KISS, and ARP code, and you'll
have
everything you need right there. Make it so you can replace the AX.25
with
the next generation (if and when there is one).
Make sure the IP stuff can operate down to 120 seconds round trip time.
I was interested in this at one time, but I've always had a spare
machine
that was easier just to add an ethernet card and JNOS to it. Now I
pretty much
use Linux. I liked Windows 95, I've always favored Microsoft Windows to
X-Windows. It just looks so much more professional. On the other hand,
I've
never liked the proprietary (and convoluted) Microsoft interface over
the
Unix interface (OS API).
Let me know if you need a VxD writing tool for Windows 95. I'm
liquidating
my bench stock and have VtoolsD from Vireo that I'll let go for
half-price :-)

Some of us think the TNC ought to handle all that and simply connect
to the computer (Mac/Unix/etc) via existing SL/IP or PPP interfaces.
Would save re-inventing the wheel for The Operating System Of The
Week.
Others will tell you to simply hang the TNC on your old PC and let
the old PC with xNOS be your IP TNC. But I want mine in a box w/o
a fan.

Hi... many thanks to all the people who wrote to me - I have now
configured diald, and it works *PERFECTLY*, and *FIRST TIME* :-)
I need to tune it up slightly, but I think its far more advanced than I
had anticipated... It does exactly what I want!
Many thanks again...
