Most of the cost is in the transverters but they are just not a high volume
item and there are only a couple of sources. So the way I see it to get 56k
most users will spend over $1000 - not very compelling. I did it because ...
gee I don't know .. it's great having my own private 56k link I guess. 8^)

No, I'm wrong, doesn't matter how many times I read that, it says the
same thing.
Phil, what do you see here as attractive enough to pursue ?

Yea, then we could hook up our PS-186 with Multitasking OS to it...
This seems to be pretty much the circle of conversation. First someone
wants to use Win, WinWG, Win95, WinNT, etc. Then someone suggests using
this or that, then after a week or so everyone pretty much has made their
contribution. No matter what you do with Win95, etc, you're still left
with nothing to hook it to. I don't think anyone seriously contemplates
hooking whatever they get up to a TNC through a serial port anymore.
Most of these guys wanting to use Windows and TCP/IP are just wasting their
time. It's completely deficiant. What they really want to do is use
Windows software GUI to do what they are dreaming about. Today that means
that they should be thinking about an ethernet card, and Windows GUI
applications that interface to a black-box on the network (AUI, Twisted,
BNC, Fiber, whatever).
If someone comes up to you, wants to use Win95 and serial ports, then hack
his head off and weigh the brain. I guarantee it will be less than two
pounds...
Gracilis had the right idea. They missed it by a mark by not including
ethernet. Someone should step in and rectify that. No one will until the
rules are changed. I think everyones waiting around to see if the Spread-
Spectrum rules are opened up, or to give up the hobby completely. If the
ARRL wins its protectionism band plan, I think the exodus will be very
swift to Part 95.

You've hit the nail right on the head for me. That is exactly what I'm
doing.
I used to view the amateur licensing conditions as enablers to active
experimentation, and now I view them as positive disincentives. I've
already
begun probing for alternatives here in Australia. If we have anything
equivalent I'll certainly be seriously considering not bothering
renewing
my license.
While I don't condone breaking the law, it has occurred to be a number
of
times that we have so much unallocated bandwidth lying idle by way of
unused TV channels here in Sydney that noone would notice/mind if I
borrowed
one of them for some SS experimentation, especially with directional
antennae.
Some of the new 'SS transcievers in a chip' that are beginning to appear
make the idea extremely attractive.
All I'm looking for is something that will deliver a couple of hundred
kbps, at low power, that is easy to assemble, even or idiots, using off
the shelf components. The more I see the efforts of companies to meet
the mobile telephone market, the more I see us dragging the chain by
not picking up the technology and making use of it.

Subject: WINNOS ? - A Proposal
Hi.....
I seem to have started a bit of a discussion here, which is exactly what I
wanted.
All of the radio amateurs in our area, Would kill for a Windows version over
the the DOS versions of JNOS That we run, Memory and stabilty problems should
be reduced (Not solved I hasten to add !)
My Programming Knowledge is mainly on the software side of things, Writing
device drivers/NDIS Drivers/Eprom Code, etc. is out of my league I'm afraid
(I'm actually a 18yr old Student).
I consider myself well version in Windows 'C' Programming, I have written a
peice of software that handles fingers,telnets,etc... Soon it will handle Time
Servers,FTP,HTTP,etc.........
I have based the functionality on the huge success of JNOS.
I don't know if there are any people here who are willing to join in a Win NOS
Project, I can supply the main software but just need a hand talking to the
the TNC's (KISS), I have the main code already written but just need to talk
to the TNC's.
If you wish to render your services available please mail me and post to this
group, Perhaps we can set up a working group and get this project moving, From
what I see from the postings there is a lot of Interest.
Thankyou Very much !
