You win the prize John. After hours of web surfing I finally found what I
needed, and it's right on ftp.ucsd.edu called ethrax25.zip. It replaces an
ethernet driver and makes windows believe that it's hooked up to an ethernet
card. It diverts it's packets that are now formatted for a kiss TNC to a
serial port.
I too use Linux for most things, but I need this packet driver for one machine
in particular that I am going to work on. It will be a laptop and have to
be portable, therefore no oportunity to have it cabled into a Linux or Jnos
machine.

I looked into this late last year (before upgrading to Win95). I've also
become
more involved with Linux as the OS of choice. The way I outlined what is
needed
was simplistic:
+----------+
IP Stack
+----------+
SHIM
+----------+
Serial
+----------+
Where SHIM is a virtual device driver module. That is, it interfaces the
serial
port code library to the network layer. I envisioned taking the Karn LAPB
code
and working with the serial library. That part done, the next step would be
the
SHIM code to make the system calls (VxD module). I even started the serial
code
to the point where one window showed what was on the cable, but I lost
interest
pretty quickly.
There's no sense playing with Windows to do this sort of thing anymore.
Having
seen Win95, there's a lot there I could do without. I've been watching
Caldera
pretty closely. I've had the two Betas (Linux) and still run with the second.
They are expecting a 2QTR release of Sun WABI (although this is the 2QTR now :-
)
for Linux. I've been running WABI on my Solaris box, and it is slow in the
serial port area (486/120MHz) but otherwise a very nice Windows emulator.
What does that get you. Well, if they base the port on Linux 1.3 and up,
you'll
have Kernel AX25, Unix, and a WABI for about 200 bucks. I like the way
Windows
works for my Office tools; I like the Unix way of doing things, and the AX25
kernel stuff is really what the gentleman was probably asking for originally.
While serial code is simpler (the hardware already exists), the better way to
go for a non-laptop is the ISA card (PI2, PacComm/Gracilis). There's just no
way to win with a choked down serial port, compared to the card method.

No opportunity to run Linux on the laptop ? :)
I can't wait to get a decent sort of laptop, with the native
tcpip/AX.25/NetRom
support and the relative ease by which application can be developed to use
them
it would make the ideal tool for all sorts of events requiring portable/mobile
operation.
