Hi all,

I can see a broader issue here. It could open the gate for future
significant charges for this and other services, hithertoo provided
free, for support of the various aspects of the ampr.org domain and
its use.

I would support the idea of asking nicely for special consideration,
using the same arguments that we use to justify the amateur RF bands.
(experimentation, public service, safety etc.)

Cheers,

Tony vk2tjf (Macquarie University Gateway, Sydney, 44.136.10.1)

Obviously the invoice which Brian received was generated automatically.
I was under the (probably wrong) impression that domains previously
registered were not subject to the registration fees.

Since the form is computer generated the folks at internic are either the
sort that won't stray from whatever the computer says/does and thus
re-define the term inflexible (somewhat like the domain registration
people here in Canada), or they might be amenable to an exception when
the nature of the domain is explained to them.

Perhaps it is worth approaching them to see if anything can be worked
out.

As an alternative, what would it take to get some form of top-level
domain which isn't subject to interNIC's fees?

That's my two cents (Canadian funds) for now.

A couple of folks, now, have taken note of Brian's post. Seems, I saw the
original some time ago. Looks like y'all are a little behind on reading your
mail.

I seriously doubt that Brian was asking for donations or seeking monetary
support. What he WAS pointing out was that he's ben doing this for wuite a
while, and had the foresight to register AMPRNet as a Class A.

So, gentlefolk, kwicherbichen and settle back down. Brian knows a good deal
more about networking than a large number of the lurkers... or posters...
here.

Suggestions 2 and 4 would be fun, but not worth the hassle.
Suggestion 1 would give us all a warm-fuzzy if it were successful.
Suggestion 5 would be pretty cool, an international domain would be fitting.
Suggestion 3 would need to be repeated each billing period.

Perhaps trying 1 and 5 in parallel would be worth a shot and in the event
that both look successful someone (you Brian?) make an arbitrary decision
as to which to proceed with.

Anyone with sufficient contacts/expertise willing to volunteer to
follow them up ?

Terry
