Yes, for sure. In fact, if I was still writing code I would provide a
provision for every IGate to be able to define TWO icons. One for
non-user times and the other for OPERATOR present. The PC can sure tell
the difference! If the mouse or there is any keyboard activity, then
switch to the OPERATOR icon. After 30 minutes of innactivity, revert
back to the IGate ICON (only if it is a 2-way IGate).
I'm not saying this should be used all the time nor am I encouraging its
use by everyone. Flipping ICOons in real time can be confusing to
people. But in some cases the advantages are very obvious...
In fact, The AUTHOR could provide 3 options:
MOVING ICON - (When GPS is attached and movement has been detected)
OPERATOR PRESENT - Mouse of keyboard in use
UNATTENDED - 30 miunntes later...
This way people dont have to remember to re-configure when the move their
laptop around to different applications... Of course an IGATE icon
should never show unless there is actually live conectivity at the time...

Bob,
Roger has already provided one of the features below. When movement is
detected the icon can change.
This still doesn't answer the question the others have raised and that is
of stations that have a dual purpose. Weather and I-Gate as an Example.
Roger has also addressed this, With Ui-View one can see all I-gates. They
have a Blue box around them.

Jim,
I changed the symbol yesterday afternoon to reflect the "I" Diamond. If we
activate, I'll just change it to the EOC symbol. That should work, I
think...

This again assumes that you're running an IGATE as a desktop application,
which IMHO is not where it belongs at all. And detection of keyboard or
mouse activity doesn't necessarily mean there's a qualified operator at the
keyboard. Heck, around here it might just mean you've had a minor
earthquake. A had a couple of friends serving on a Nimitz-class carrier,
and apparently all of the mice have to be kept upside down or the
screensavers will turn off every time a plane launches.

Looks like I can go... Also, driving up from DC area Thurs nite and
returning Sun if we can share wheels too...

Bob and the group,
UI_View already supports 2 Symbols. One for stationary (No GPS present)
and another for mobile (GPS present). I'm sure that if there was enough
interest in this that Roger would add a provision for a third Symbol.
I've CC'd Roger in on this, maybe he can shed some additional light on
this. I think UI-view pretty much already handles this quite well,
though.

On 8 June 2004 will be the next once-a-century Transit of Venus across the
face of the Sun and this has only been witnessed by humankind 6 times
before.
Interestingly, this will be the first such Transit since the discovery of
Radio. Thus, for the first time in history, expeditions observing this
event all over the globe will be able share the coordinates of their
observations in real-time via radio.
I plan on participating via APRS, an HF voice net and AO-40 all from the
Eastern Mediteranian. (I'll be in Turkey that day, as a horse-holder
for my wife, the astronomer)...
See http://web.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/VenusTransit.html
It lasts 6 hours and the event is centered over the middle east, though
observers as far East as Japan and New Zealand will see the beginning and
as far west as NY City will see the end. (Clouds willing)...

Bob, what exactly are we going to see? Assuming we don't blind ourselves in
the process, of course.
If it does involve staring into the sun, I've found that high-density floppy
discs make pretty decent filters. Just rip one open and look through the
coated mylar disc. Is Venus going to be a visible speck on the face of the
sun?

Situation: Windows 2000 or XP, with a Peet Bros. weather station sitting on
a serial port. I'd like to feed the serial data from the weather station to
two different programs on the same machine, such as an APRS program to
transmit it on RF along with the Peet Bros. Weather Outlook data logger.
What software is there that can split the serial data? (I did some digging
around and found one commerical product that sells for 100 euros. I'm
looking for other options.)
Related question: As I recall, APRS+SA doesn't read Peet Bros station data
directly. What's the best way to get weather data into APRS+SA?

It won't work. Two programs can NOT share a single serial port.
You CAN split the data to two ports, however! You should diode isolate
the split but you CAN simply send the data to each port by splicing the
appropriate wires together
Ser1 2 ----------\
\
5 ---| \______________ Output of Device
| /
| /
Ser2 2 ----------/
|
5 ---|_______________________ Device Ground
To diode split put one diode in each of the two legs from the output.
No chance of voltage backlash that way but it's really not essential,
just a good piece of protective work for both the computer and the
device!
