I am mounting the control head on my Kenwood THD700 in my 2002 Venture van
using a piece of 90 degree angle aluminium. Should I paint the bracket
white or black to reduce the heating effect from the sun? Or does it
matter?
Also does anyone know the dimensions of the passenger side air bag and
inflating zone.

VMWare is surprisingly easy on CPU. The only thing I saw being taxed was
memory, but you can tell it how much memory to use. An extremely nice
program. I think they have a trial mode where you get a temporary key from
them. You might want to try that to see just how well it works. I did and
was hooked. Later on though I converted entirely to Linux, so lost the
need for it.

I wasn't suggesting that you go all-out and become one of our developers!
You can submit patches to any of the 12 developers. If accepted, it
becomes part of the code.
Hey, come up with a new feature, do the back-end code (regular C-code), and
I'll do the GUI portion that goes with it. We've done that for other
people in the past and it has worked well. It saves them from trying to
learn how/why all the widgets work.

I was trying to get you to define what that might be! ;-)
Any hints on exactly what you're looking for?

I've looked into that in the past. In order to do that function you must
put the pointer into a mode in which it sends you every mouse event, and
that ends up being a lot of processing of events. You have to handle every
sort of thing the mouse might do, including doing the right thing when the
mouse leaves/enters the window, etc. It would be a bit of a pain. I deemed
it more work than the benefits it would provide, but other people's
benefit/hassle ratio may be different. If you come up with it I'll be
happy to test it out. I've been into that mouse code quite a bit, so I can
provide pointers (pun intended) into the code and books.

You're thinking along the same lines as we are mostly. The next phase of
our project will give you all of what you've talked about in the last two
sections.

Subject: Registering the Precision Mapping map.ocx that PMmap installs
From: kb2scs@optonline.net

Hi Robbie
That is normal operation. Undertow wants every application that uses its
Map.ocx to register it. When you installed UI-VIEW you registered the
Map.ocx that came with it. Now PMmap has installed another Map.ocx so you
have to register that one also.
Each ocx is located where the program exe is located so registering PMmap's
ocx will have no effect on UI-VIEWS ocx.
This is something that Undertow has programmed into the ocx so therefore I
have no control over it.

This sounds and looks interesting. Will it work under Precision Map 5.x at
all?

NWSGet is a beta application designed to download and automatically
underlay NWS radar images in Ui-View/Precision Mapping. The radar images
are displayed underneath PMap street detail.
When used with Ui-NWS, the radar images display over the WWA Shape file
areas and beneath the PMap street detail.
See http://www.billdiaz.dynip.com for details and to download the beta
version.

Monty,
Yes the underlays created by NWSGet will work with all versions of PMap
Streets and Traveler from 3.x thru 6.1.
However, for use with Ui-View32, you need PMap 6.0 and PMapServer6. Roger
Barker has indicated that underlays will not work in Ui-View with PMap 5.0
and PMapServer.

What about the silly X-eyes program that watches your mouse? It seems to
know where it's at even when it doesn't have focus.

That's why I asked if there's a free equivalent. Something unencumbered by
patents.

If you not sure, you might want to talk with Curt Mills who heads the Linux
XASTIR APRS project. It being open source has allowed it to be one of the
most feature rich GUI's in APRSdom.

OK, it is about time I add my 2 cents worth. Right Curt. Curt WE7U and I
both attended the 2004 Washington State SAR Conference last week.
Sure wish there was a SIMPLE, CHEAP and GOOD mapping support for SAR
operations. One that can be supported with the old hand me down computers
that are available to DEM and SAR groups.
Well from what I have seen at the SAR Conference, the Maptech Terrain
Navigator Pro (www.maptech.com) is the best topo map program that I have
seen to date. Rick Hood gave some great presentations at the Conference on
this program and GPS usage. It is not cheap. Cost is $xxx with a special
price of $xxx to SAR groups. No, our county does not own it and can't
afford it . No, it will not work with APRS!
Well there is an APRS patch program that was written to give it limited APRS
compatibility. This program is called DMapper and was written by
Dave Neys W7PDQ of Bend, OR and his web site is:
http://www.roadfacts.com/software/dmapper/dmapperInfo.htm
Presently it can interface with Maptech Topo maps and DeLorme Topo USA. The
downfall is it will currently only track 4 SAR teams. He is working on an 8
team version but that will be the limit for now. I believe the 4 team
version is available for free and the 8 team version will have a fee
associated with it. Yes, I have looked at this program and it seems to be
limited but has great possibilities for SAR applications. No, I don't have
either of these commercial mapping CD's so, I have not been able to do a
true evaluation of Dave's program.
Now for what I would consider the IDEAL APRS SAR mapping program:
1. It should be free or nearly so.
2. It should be simple. The KISS principle.
3. It should be on the Windows Operating System which the majority of us
old duffers use.
4. It should be capable of being run on "older" cast away computers and
laptops with a minimal learning curve.
5. It should be capable of being run on a laptop and also have the same
maps capable of being uploaded to a mapping GPS. Now that it the real
monkey wrench!
6. It must have Topo Maps as the main mapping system for SAR use which in
our areas is mainly in mountainous terrain.
7. The maps must be capable of being altered by the user, i.e., add dirt
roads, new roads, delete errors, etc.
Well, am I dreaming, or what? No, I can't imagine that anyone will ever
come up with a system that meets all of these requirements. What I think I
could settle for is, if someone could write with an APRS patch program that
would allow the GARMIN Topo CD maps to be utilized for real live zoomable
maps in a Windows APRS program. Then we could see live APRS trackers on the
computer screen in base camp and the search teams could have the exact same
maps as the background maps in their GPS. Now if the SAR teams use a
Kenwood D7A radio with a Garmin V GPS or similar unit, for their tracker,
they would also be able to see the other teams on their GPS screen!
Would that be the cat's meow or what? Maybe Garmin would make an APRS Ham
Radio for us similar to their Rino 130 but on Ham radio frequencies and at 5
to 7 watts of output power. Kenwood, you better look out. Such an HT with
not only contain a TNC but also a GPS with uploadable maps!
I better quit now. I am drooling to much. But all kidding aside, do we
have anyone in our Ham community who might be able to come up with an APRS
program that would be capable of using the Garmin Topo maps?
