Check out: PC-ALE at http://www.chbrain.dircon.co.uk/pcale.html

In particular, the Userguide at:
http://www.chbrain.dircon.co.uk/aleuserguide.html

I didn't find any list of equipment though several caveats as to the use of
amateur grade gear is dicussed. After following the discussion list for a
while, it appears that many of the computer controllable rigs are useable.

My previous post where I started this subject line - made the point that
many moons ago when this came up... the naysayers made the same
statement you just made now - back then - - - this sig is great for a
geezer like me with old-timers disease... if I forget a topic or thread
for a while... I can be assured that it will return (and remind me)...
also if I forget the personality traits of folks here... well by
golly... they will remind me.... (just a little humour)...

This time the context of slotted ALOHA is a little different (I think).
the point this time is just to pick a slot (already someone here has
mentioned 1 second slots based on GPS 1pps intervals)- think WWV's tics
as marking the time slots (notionally - as I type the idea/concept)...
any slot choice is better than "anarchy" (no slots) if you can believe
the statistical magicians (and I have some confidence in them since
they've saved my bacon)... I have a caveat...and that is if you accept
the premise that increasingly - CSMA is not being used... and most here
accept that argument in the case of trackers (not digi's). Either the
tracker has no carrier sense of any sort... or it's area of reception is
very limited (thus we use digi's to get our signal out further).

The better approach is to go back in time and use the method in
Hawaii... where TWO channels were used... and the master station (digi)
sends on one channel... and it listens on another channel... I'd even
advocate the second channel being 9600 since it's just digi's
transmitting on that channel.... but for mobile command post events...
9600 is too $$$ will be the argument (there goes a chance for improving
this network)...

We all know that the trackers aren't going to change to another freq (or
speed), and but we do have the opportunity with some of the new trackers
- that have a PIC, AVR, Moto, Z80, Rabbit, ??? on board to have them use
GPS for time slotting... for arguments sake, lets say that the digi
listening channel (tracker xmtr channel) is 144.39... nice because
that's what we have now.

SO.. 60 slots per minute (the previous system I worked on had two slots
per second... the first 40 seconds handled 80 trackers, the next 10
seconds were one second slots... for telemetry... and the last 20
seconds - the digi's had to themselves at 9600 to pass data. If you
wanted to receive data back from the digi... the TNC had to change to
9600 to listen to the output of the digi... the network in that case was
problematic and I won't bore the group with those details (as some here
already have glassy eyes and hit the delete key))....

With similarly smart digis (that aren't tracking at 500ms slots or which
seconds for what function...and not changing speed)... they can control
the data rate of "lids" - whatever the local group considers "lid"
operation (homes or parked vehicles transmitting at 15 second intervals,
digi floods, relay/relay/relay, or whatever)... similarly... an
emergency beacon can be prioritized like mad.... this "SHOULD" result
in a doubling of throughput on our 1200bps channel.

Of course the whole argument falls flat when home stations with no
GPS... weather/telemetry stations with no GPS... all are mentioned
(sigh)... but then... they really are dumb devices and we have trackers
that will also never go to time slots as well.

All this being said... aren't we already "run amuck in anarchy" ????

Who coordinates the slots? That's the problem... we run amuck in
anarchy.

NVIS and data... with ALE... now we're talking some new technology...
Given the link margin with NVIS... I don't think 1200 bps APRS can
work... but maybe PSK31 APRS with NVIS and ALE... now your talking about
a real tactical solution... that doesn't need digi's (infrastructure) to
work !!!

Greetings from NH!
I purchased a few Trimble 6 channel GPS boards at a local Hamfest. Trying
to find out where to apply power and get data out of it. It has a 8 pin (2
rows of 4 @ 2mm spacing where it was connected to another circuit board.
For markings it has the numbers: 39818 on both sides. Unit is 3.25" x 1
13/16" (8.3cm x 4.7cm)
Units were used for vehicle tracking and relayed info on a wireless network
utilizing cell phone towers. Package has the name of "SmartSys" and is
dated 04/01/99.
Anybody have anything like this?
I have digital images of this board for anyone who need more data.

Thank you!

Yes, and it's important with Voice comm as well! I've been checking into
my NG nets using NVIS and this in within a 300 mile area. It works 100% of
the time "if" the correct frequency is selected and frequency selection is
key to a successful NVIS system. With ALE, you plug in maybe 10 channels
on various frequencies (across the bands) and you got it...100% comm with
antennas 2 feet off the ground with very little noise! Makes 1000 watts
station obsolete for most comm work! It is a 'system' however and most net
managers go blank when you tell them their nets can not be fixed on a
specific band or frequency. At this time...not an acceptable concept on ham
radio. Don't know if it would ever work with ham radio. Major changes in
thinking would have to occur to really use ALE and that issue.... being
stuck in the past....well never mind! Not being a sheep, I'd love to have
a radio with ALE. I would like to think this is in our future!! I hope so
anyway.

Jim
