First thing I have done when I purchased several D-Link products is

a) Connected soldering iron
b) Connected and powered up wi-fi product to make sure I don't have a out of
box failure
c) Disconnected 802.11 device
d) Removed original antenna connector and re-installed a standard N Female.

It is much less expensive to replace the reverse connectors with a quality
N connector than to buy the special jumpers (which also add loss) and it is
much easyer to reach into the junk box late at night or on the weekend and
find a N connector than a reverse SMA or TNC. Most of my feedline is 1/2
hardline and all of my jumpers are N to N male so it makes it very easy to
work with.

Just after I posted the original message, I visited the Garmin website
and found out about the serial ports (retail blister-pack packaging made
it impossible to see the back of the unit). Naturally, the unit has a
screwball Garmin-unique connector consisting of 4 in-line round contact
pads on the back of the unit intended to mate with a drop-in desk charger.

[ Pfanc/ Purple Computing -- are you listening ???]

I even downloaded the PDF owners manual for the ForeTrex but it has
absolutely no info on the serial port other than to identify it on a
picture of the back of the unit; i.e. does it output standard 4800-8-N-1
NMEA or does it only work with some proprietary software provided by
Garmin ?

RELAY, WIDE2-2 for the whole trip once I left California. This was a
major change from last year where I frequently had to switch to plain
old dumb RELAY, WIDE, WIDE. This year WIDEn-N support seems to have
become ubiquitous.

Of course, as soon as I came over the mountain peaks on I-15 between Las
Vegas and California on the way home, i had to remove RELAY from the
path to work in SoCal's oddball WIDEn-N-only,no-response-to-RELAY-at-all
digi network.

Carl,

Look into a pair of 802.11 bridges. With moderate gain yagi's you should be
able to make the path just fine as long as you have line of sight and
nothing in your Fresnel Zone.

Check out a pair of

Or

or

Some are better than others. Check around.

This looks like a really neat item for not only APRS use but also possibly
repeater use! 5 minutes of weather may be a bit much, wish they would make a
feature to increase or decrease the ammount of time the speaker/contacts are
active. I guess someone with programing knowledge could interface this unit
to something like EchoStation or APRS and accomplish it that way.

Agreed. FB! And I'm glad to see your path of only WIDE2-2 being used. On
a trip from here (Central California coast) through Barstow, CA to Santa Fe,
NM and Las Cruces, NM and back through LA last Christmas, I found setting my
digipath to only WIDE2-2 worked quite well on the entire trip. Longer or
broader paths weren't needed for being seen on the internet or on VHF RF in
the relevant area and beyond. The continuing build-out of the WIDEn-N
network makes this truer than ever.

I think it's already safe to say at least everything West of the Rockies in
the continental US is now WIDEn-N capable. WIDE2-2 or TRACE2-2 alone work
just fine for most, including digis and WX stations, without causing
duplicate packets or excessive bandwidth consumption of our limited VHF
channel capacity.
Thanks!

This was my reply to Mark's original post on 2004/04/20. The unit is a
Radio Shack product.

I've had one for a couple of months. It works well. The USB allows
programming of the receiver (fips codes, frequencies, etc) from the
computer and provides a popup screen with the text message for any watches
or warnings. A summary file of these watches and warnings stays on the
computer until you delete it. The display on the receiver itself keeps a
count down timer going for any watches or warnings until they expire. With
no watches or warnings it shows the channel it is tuned to. The manual is
pretty good.

All told, I'm happy with it. Let me know if you have further questions
about it.
