Sir, I don't know about others, but I am not a very financially forward
person. It's the antiquated equipment you speak of at very low prices
that has allowed me to experiment further into APRS by using DOS
programs. I for one do not wish to see formats upgrades that will not
allow backwards compatibility. A lot of new amateur Operators today are
from the "working" class of folk who sometimes don't make much above 6
bucks an hour. a 50-60 buck HT along with a used TNC and a 5 dollar 486
laptop from a HAMFEST (how much I paid for mine) allows these new
operators a taste of some tactical to practical type Amateur fun. Just
food for thought.

And importantly, a part of the spec is the user defined format, which
explicitly allows ANYONE to create their own APRS packet types for
ANYTHING. For some reason people seem to want to forget about this, I
fought hard to get this included precisely so we would not have these
arguments about what to include. You do not need to rewrite the APRS spec
to do something, you do not need to convince Bob or the APRS WG that
something will be useful or cool. You just do it. If it turns out to be
useful or cool, then program authors will pick up on the new format and
include it in their programs...

I have to agree with Bob's comments here. I have a Magellan Meridian
Platinum with the neat little map display with the topo feature and all
that. Many a time, here in town, it shows me a b1.2 block to full block
or street off. So while I like it bunches (not the price <sigh>) it
does have it's limits. Of course we could switch to 8 or ten digit grid
systems like the military maps and really go wild on the accuracy issue.
I think APRS is a fun and useful thing as is. But realize that GPS
accuracy has it's limits also. BTW, we will be experimenting with APRS
in this year's Cheaha Challenge bike Marathon in Alabama. 500 plus
riders, 102 mile course. Next year we're shooting for full integration.

I received my OpenTracker today. Hooked it up to an ADI 201 HT and it works
like a charm.
I am using this in the compressed posit mode. I found the firmware load
gets hosed up if I try smart beaconing. Went back to timed beacons and
everything aok. Used a Garmin Rino 120 to test with and everything seems
AOK!
This is what UI-View did:
0:23:55R WA6OFT-8>APOT01,WIDE,SAR <UI Len=36>:!/=6D^1X;cj7!G 14.0V 36CLPSO
SAR 117
I do notice in the packet voltage and temp....my my...I LIKE THIS!!!!
However....need a space added between
C (celsius) and the rest of the comment. No big deal though...just download
new firmware when it's fixed and Bam!
Need to get some sleep, but will mount is as soon as I find a plastic screw.
Anyway, very cool, Scott! Will start testing locally, soon!
Jim, WA6OFT
