Kenwood took a big gamble designing a radio with APRS as its central
focus. Clearly sales haven't been what they expected or may have been
led to believe might have been possible. If only 10,000 units were sold
it should come as no surprise that they wouldn't want to continue
developing the line or supporting it. 10,000 hams is a VERY small
percentage of the world's amateur population. It's only something like
5% of the U.S. amateur licensee base, IIRC.
Is it possible that Kenwood believed that by developing the D-7 and
D-700 radios that a much larger percentage of hams would try APRS and,
hence, boost their sales?
Both radios are difficult to use unless you have a computer tied to them
which pretty much eliminates the need for all the APRS programming in
the radio itself. Ever tried to send any kind of a text message using
the D-7 keypad or the D-700 mic??? 5 WPM MORSE CODE IS FASTER!!!!
Now, I'm really going to stick my neck out here....
Folks: APRS is dying. It is a "novelty" item and the longer that you
(Bob Bruninga) continue to insist that every new APRS innovation must be
fully backward compatible then we are destined to continue dying. I
agree that those people who insist on using their stone knives and
bearskins to communicate or (as someone told me privately just now) the
1845-vintage hand-carved wooden radios ought not to be left in the dust
but if we carefully examine the history of amateur radio in the past 40
years since SSB became the de facto mode on HF you will see some
alarming similarities in the trends happening in APRS to those which
have happened to ham radio in general.
Has anyone else noticed the alarming ABSENCE of the Brothers Sproul and
the other key players from the SIG the past two years? THAT should be
telling us all something!!!
I greatly respect and admire Bob Bruninga for everything he has done to
start this great experiment but I believe it is time to move on and move
into the 21st Century in both our thinking and our approach to improving
what we do.
You're a great guy, Bob. Worthy of every honor which has been bestowed
upon you and still hold my ultimate respect. I believe it's time to
accept the accolades you so richly deserve and turn over the reigns of
APRS development and where it might go to others whose visions may open
up whole new vistas for what APRS can and, of a right, OUGHT to be.
Frankly, I'm surprised that some of the other developers haven't
completely abandoned the APRS Spec and moved on in new directions
already. If we truly want to encourage growth and expanded development
it is definitely time to set a new course for this hobby.
Let's do something to make APRS virtually indispensable (I hope I
spelled that right!) to EVERY ham. Something that every ham will HAVE to
have as a part of a complete station. Right now we're about as exciting
as sitting around and watching the grass grow! Is ANYONE else as bored
as I am with APRS???? Does anyone really care about where we're going???
When is the last time you sit and marveled at watching a mobile APRS
station move around your city? It was the cat's pajamas for all of us
once upon a time and it's kind of like the feeling you get after after
watching the 100th re-run of "The Hunt for Red October"... Eventually
you get tired of seeing the little subs on the sonar displays moving
around, too!
So, to paraphrase a commercial enterprise which will remain unnamed
herein:
"WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO TODAY??!?!?"
More importantly: "Where do you want to go TOMORROW?!?!?!"

Sorry folks - I just discovered tonite that the DNS entry for kc7zru.net
was FUBAR'd - apparently has been for a few days. I thought I had things
'auto-updating' correctly, but alas - since I've taken a job in IT, I've
sadly neglected my own stuff. I wasen't paying attention. ::Bad Geek!::
It's not only fixed now, but the fault that allowed the oversight has
been corrected.

and
www.kc7zru.net for a slightly out of date, local interest ham site.

On a related note, how many of those 10,000 Kenwood users are actually APRS
users? How many of them USE APRS, and how many just have it because it was
a feature on the top-of-the-line radio they bought?
Just because my rig does CW, doesn't mean I'm a CW operator.

Hello. I've found some sketchy info on the web about this, and so I'm
looking for a quick answer if possible. Is it possible to connect a Radio
AND a GPS through the DB9 pin on the back of the KPC-3+ running 8.3
firmware? The thing is, I want to be able to have my KPC-3+ run as a
standalone tracker, so as to fit in with the Baker to Vegas beacon
schedule, but I would like to monitor the output on the computer. I seem
to have run across some information on how to connect both the radio and
GPS to the DB9, and have the computer connected to the DB25 to accomplish
this. I have seen different pins suggested. If any of you know how to
wire this up like this, and what if any mods need to be done to the KPC-3+,
I would greatly appreciate a response! I have about a day to make this
work, or I'll have to forego the computer display.
If it helps, I'll be wiring an ADI (Kenwood style DIN mic connector), and a
Garmin GPS-12XL. What I really need is the pin assignments for the DB9 on
the KPC-3+
Thank you VERY much in advance for this information. Several of us are
trying to make this work.
