Hey James, WD4INS "Gerald" here, I've been off of aprs for a while. I'm
trying to get it all going again. I had a computer failure and alot of
other things going on and just let it go for a while. Anyway my question
is this, I have WinAPRS 2.72 and pm maps 6.0 on this computer. PM maps
6.0 is registered on this computer but when I try to open a "New Map
Prec Mapping" under the windows tab I get a message that says "
Precision Mapping has not been registered on this machine Please
register it first an then it will work with Win APRS" my only option is
to check "ok". What am I doing wrong. I bought 6.0 back some time ago
and tried it on another computer but was unable to make it work due to
the same message.
What do you think?

The answer is pretty simple. It won't work!
WinAPRS from Version 2.6.0 on can only use Precision Mapping Version 5. PM
Version 6 is not compatible with your WinAPRS 2.7.2 program. WinAPRS up
through Version 2.5.1 used Precision Mapping Version 3.0 or 3.5. These are
the only PM Versions that will work with WinAPRS.
Mark Sproul is channeling his resources to use Tiger Maps which are free
downloads, rather than Precision Maps for his newer versions of WinAPRS.
Precision Mapping just makes things too difficult by changing some codes
every time they issue a new version. That means that the APRS program would
also need to be changed every time the PM maps are updated. An unfortunate
situation. Yes, I too like the Precision Maps and I also like WinAPRS.
I know that is not what you wanted to hear but to the best of my knowledge,
that is the way it is and is going to stay. BTW, Ui-View does run with both
PM 5 and PM 6 but I can't tell you how they did it.
