Right you are, Daron,

I should have mentioned that, altought, I tought, at the time it "went with
out saying", on the above topic.

Thanks for the clarification for the gang.

P.S. The "kids" came today to wire me up to the "Gig-E"; the cable from the
edge switch to the jack in my office is solid wire. (CAT 6, I think, no
time to check.) But from that jack to my computer, is stranded, about 2 M
(about 6 feet long).

That 'tube' looks like a multi-lens arrangement, probably two. But yeah,
the rest is a mirror and cardboard.

If you could figure out what lenses to use, it shouldn't be too hard to
copy and fabricate your own.

For the mirror, I wonder if it's front surface or just a regular glass
back-surface mirror?

It should be OK now. You are using an older Peet that sends out a shorter
data string, and you recently changed from Data Logger (!!) to Packet
($ULTW) as your format, the parser was not correctly picking up the shorter
ULTW, I have fixed this.

Note that this format is not preferred in most situations, as the data is
only sent out every 5 minutes. This should only be used when the TNC is in
converse mode, so the packet is sent out immediately upon receipt by the
TNC. The problem with using converse mode in the TNC is that on power up
TNCs go to command made, so no data will be transmitted until the TNC is
placed in converse mode. I do seem to recall some TNC's might have a
parameter that causes the TNC to go to converse mode on power-up, but
unless you have this, and are using this, I'd recommend against it.

If you are using this in the more normal GPS mode of the TNC, where you
have set GPSHEAD to "$ULTW", you are needlessly increasing the latency of
the data. The ULTW packet is only sent once every 5 minutes from the U2k to
the TNC...each time the TNC sees a packet starting with $ULTW it stores it
in a buffer...when the timers say it ready to transmit, it is the last
packet in that buffer which gets transmitted. With ULTW, the packet could
be 5 minutes old at the time it gets transmitted. On the other hand, !! is
sent to the TNC every three seconds, the data will only be 3 seconds old
max.

How hard is it to "remote" a dispaly from the laptop? Is it possible to
extend the cable?
Has anyone tried this? Is it possible to turn a laptop screen into an LCD
monitor?
Thanks,
Joe

I'm not sure what you're asking. Many laptops have a video out connector the
same as a full sized computer that you can plug a 'regular' monitor into.

And by this do you mean you want to use the LCD screen on your laptop to
view an external video source, like a DVD player, or VCR, or closed circuit
camera?

Hi,

I am experimenting with I-Gating "a" local friend on a business trip up
into Wisconsin. I am using a filtered aprsservr and b/myfriend.. This
works perfectly, rf stations are seeing me I-Gate myfriend.

Now the question, why would another I-Gate put myfriend back onto the IS
as indicated by Findu with the TCPIP,wa9inf*,qAS,igate ?

Am _I_ the one causeing this, or is this allowed by the IS system?

Hopeing to learn,

Robbie

I am trying to do two different things:
1 - take apart a laptop and mount the display separate from the rest of it
by a few feet. I know I could just cough up some $$$ and buy an LCD monitor
and plug it in the VGA port, but I already have the laptop and the display
size is perfect.
2 - I may end up with an extra laptop missing some parts. Is there any way
to use the display as anything other than a replacement in another laptop.
3 - I have tried the TV out and the quality is quite low.

Thanks,
Joe

Older IGate software gated all packets back to the Internet. This was
discussed at length over the past couple of years. Basically, what was
determined was the following:

Third-party packets with TCPIP or TCPXX in the third-party header should
not be gated back to the Internet. (It must be assumed that TCPXX
packets could be gated to RF, though it shouldn't happen.) If the
software is not "smart enough" to monitor for TCPIP and TCPXX, then all
third-party packets should not be gated to APRS-IS.

Generic queries (data type ?) are for "local" use only and should not be
gated to the Internet. This does not preclude generic queries being
generated by a directly attached client station.

I would guess that the IGate gating the packets back to the Internet is
using older software.

In a word? No! At least not for the average person.

Problem is laptops do NOT feed video in any form you could ever
reasonably home to intercept from the motherboard to the display.

You might be able to extend it a few inches without degrading the
quality. Maybe even a foot or so. But I'll lay even odds you'll have
lots of problems. Besides, have you ever taken apart a laptop and
LOOKED at the bundle of wires (or the density of the flexiboard
traces) that are required to get the signals to the display?

Yes, it can be done. I've had 'plywood monsters' that were laptop
prototypes that had everything 'spread out', but they ain't pretty.
And it wouldn't be the kind of thing you could do and undo easily.

The VGA output that you get OUT of a laptop is specially generated
just for that purpose.
