We managed to get a mention of APRS and Findu.com in the Detroit Free Press
this morning:
http://www.freep.com/money/tech/mwend15_20040315.htm
(I mentioned APRSWorld, too, but it wasn't picked up in the article!)

Yes, external 10k and variable resistor will do fine.
Nice to be abel to dial it in exactly...

Thank you both. I added an extra zero by accident so I should really be 10K
not 100K. Darn midnight shifts! So do I need to do anything with the the
two resistor locations inside the tnc where it is suggested to install 2.4k
resistors? Honestly I can't find a 2.4k resistor in the junk box so I was
going to use some variables then I could dial the voltage right in. I was
just curious if anything else neede to be done to the tnc or if I could
just connect to the proper pin on the tnc.

Do links like that to articles remain forever?
I dont do mch with internet news, and so am not familiar
with ohw they do stuff.
I'd like to add a link to my web page, but wont if it
will evaporate later....

APRS and Venus:
On 8 June 2004 will be the 7th transit of Venus ever observed by humankind.
This rare event occurs only twice every 150 years or so, and was first
predicted by Keppler, but not observed until after his death and then, only
by one "student" who then died within the year and it was only documented
by his friend who discovered his notes.
It was to see the next transit of Venus from Tahiti that Captian Cook
sailed "round" the world in 1769 and also was to layu claim to
Antarctica...etc... (i'll check my facts later...)...
Anyway, this will be the FIRST transit of Venus since Marconi developed
radio and we hope to use HAM radio to herald this event. And in fact, I
want to use APRS to track the path of Venus across the sun from around the
world LIVE so everyone can see the effect of paralax and geometry.
SO, right now I need an amateur astronomer to work with his telescope and
lenses and help me to develop a way so that any participating APRS station
can easily project the sun in focus onto a piece of Graph paper.
The size of the sun needs to be either 2.5" or 2.5cm, whatever... so that
it matches everyone'elses plot exactly...
See my WEB page for details:
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/VenusTransit.html
Sorry, but this is not much of a USA event except people east of NY. But it
will be seen from NY throught europe and all the way to New Zeland. It
lasts 8 hours, so it is a casual event...

Bob, I would not place my eye behind the translucent paper, instead,
I would observe from in front. Paper is not a very good filter for
intense sunlight. :(
There was a similar discussion here for a transit of Mercury.
It also seems to me that you need to track the sun so that you are
always pointing directly at it.

Hmmm ... Bob, I don't see how this will work .... you realize that the disk
of the sun will be moving across the graph paper ... especially with the
*significant* magnification necessary to get the size of the sun's disk that
you want. So, either you will have to "track" the sun with this set-up or
move the disk of the sun to the *exact* same spot on the graph paper before
plotting each position of Venus.
Also, and I may be wrong, but I doubt that you'll be able to get that
*significant* magnification with one or two "cheap" lenses.

Yes, exactly. You draw a 2.53" or 2.53cm circle on the
graph paper and whenever you want to enter a posit,
simply move the telescope to re-center the sun in the
circle. Trivial to do...

Ah, yes, now that is the original question...

I must be doing something wrong. Every time I try this, my graph paper
bursts into flames. ;)
Maybe I just need a bigger lens. One of these, maybe?

Subject: It works! Three instances of UI-View running in one PC to create
3-map web page...
From: "Stephen H. Smith" <WA8LMF2@aol.com>

This is my latest experiment with the UI-View personal web server.
The page located at:
http://216.165.226.203:14439
creates a findu-like 3-map display that autotracks my mobile (WA8LMF --
no SSID).
I am running three instances of UI-View32 1.99 with all three linked to
the same PMap6 server component.
Instance 1 is zoomed to show about 2/3rds of the U.S.
Instance 2 is zoomed to show Los Angeles county in California
Instance 3 is zoomed to show my neighborhood in Pasadena CA.
All three instances are connected to Internet servers using filter ports
set to receive JUST my own callsign. Since I didn't know how the
Internet servers would deal with multiple simultaneous logins with the
identical callsign, I have Instance 1 configured as WA8LMF-15, Instance
2 configured as WA8LMF-14 and Instance 3 set to WA8LMF-13
All three instances are set to autotrack WA8LMF (no SSID -- my
mobile) but not the SSID calls (my home station).
Further, a Kam dualport TNC listening off-the-air to HF 10.149 (with a
Kenwood TS-690) AND two meters 144.39 (with a Yaesu FT-1500)is connected
to AGW Packet Engine Ver 2003.309 . AGWpe separates the HF and VHF
streams from the TNC. Instance 1 of UI-View has the AGW port mask set
to accept only the HF stream. Instance 2 of UIView has the AGW port mask
set to accept only the 2 Meter stream. [ Note that as I write this, HF
propagation is HORRIBLE and very little is showing on Map 1]
All three instances are set to autocapture a map every 2 minutes, but
only the first instance is running the UI-View webserver. I have
