No, viruses and worms access the address books of their hosts, and forge
the from header. This means that when you get a virus/worm, the infected
computer was not the person that the message was "From". Rather, the
infected computer is one that has both you, and the From email address, in
its address book.

It is not surprising that someone that has your email address would also
have the email addresses of other APRS users.

I'm on daily digest... yesterday's digest was 100 messages long.
Steve K4HG has been all alone on his 'actually talk to the newbies and
elmer them' approach. Well, I'll give my vote of moral support for it,
for what it's worth. We all know there is no one size fits all path, and
although 80% of us can do fine with WIDE2-2 or 3-3 there are some who are
using long paths with. I like the personal approach - I don't monitor
144.39 as I am an ocasional only APRS user, but I saw someone who was
consistantly sending out extreme wide paths, high rate 'house beacons' to
the point that it was making QRM, I'd probably look him up on QRZ.net and
make friendly contact and educate/request new operating technique. Some
say it won't work, but I think it's probably the best positive impact I can
make in the "APRS community". I think the situation may be different in
other parts of the country, but here (Colorado) most hams I've met are
pretty courteous.

Just wrapped up a couple of hours of work on a design. It didn't start out
as a digi (it's intended as the sucessor to the OpenTracker) but it's
certainly capable of filling the role. From a hardware perspective, the
only possible issue I see with it is the use of an XR2211 FSK decoder.
I've heard people say they're not as sensitive as the TCM3105 (no longer
manufactured) or the MX-614. I've heard other people say the opposite.
I'm pretty much set on that part, though, since it's the best (and
cheapest) option I've found that still lets me keep 300 baud capability.

I was just sketching out today what would be required for an on-air firmware
update. The device I'm using holds about 64k, so that's several minutes of
on-air time at the very least. My idea is to do a 'trickle' update using UI
frames to deliver a block at a time, with no immediate 'ack'. Over a period
of hours or even days you trickle the frames out (with as direct a path as
possible) and once you've sent them all, you poll the device for status. It
reports back which frames it's missing, and you start sending those out.
You repeat the process until it's got everything, and then send it an
'install' command with a final checksum. It stops normal operation, copies
the new firmware into main memory, and reboots.

Of course, this depends on having a fair amount of extra memory accessible.
I've tentatively added MultiMediaCard support to the requirements, which
would provide plenty of storage, cheap. You can buy a 32 megabyte card at
Wal-Mart for $23. The only real bummer is that it's 3-volt only, in an
otherwise 5-volt design, which means added expense and board space for the
level translation logic.

Or I could just slap on a couple more 32k FRAMs, I guess. Smaller and
cheaper, but not as flexible - I also want this thing to work as a data
logger.

Gang,

Looking for a cheap drive for digi_Ned?
4GB Microdrive "cheap"

"How-to":

Don't freak out at some of the prices in the comments, $HK are somewhat
cheaper than $Cdn or $US.
Some of the comments are worth reading if considering attempting this.
Can't speak to 'expressed concerns' from sellers/manufacturers re 'special'
CF non-standard specs.

Haven't cost out the 1.5GB player to see if it's similarly inexpensive:

Now is a good time to mention the fact that the UIDIGI code, just like the
X1J-4, allows remote alteration of the parameters. It is password
protected, but I can remotely connect up and change the values at will.

Those that are using the MFJ or Paccom series of TNC-2 compatible units can
easily make alterations without a site visit.

I take it that those with Kantronics units may not have this remote
capability? Can anyone comment on the capabilities of the recent code from
Kantronics as to whether it allows one to take steps to minimize unnecessary
traffic?

Additionally, I also can provide Eproms to those that can't burn them. All I
ask is $5.00 to offset purchase of a Prom and postage to get it to you.

Steve has characterized it perfectly. Heck, I've even gotten viruses from
others (I'm in their address book) that has had 'my' name tagged onto it!

Gang,

Not new however just stumbled over this.

Morpheus:

How:
http://www.morpheous.co.uk/products/howitworks.asp

So, not a radar detector, blows away comments I'd written earlier.

Love the sales "line" however thought it was illegal to have 'devices' in
autos in GB since they might distract the driver? Any clarification WRT
this or more specifically a regular GPS RX display/PDA with APRS...

Lastly, wonder where in the files and in what format the camera posits are
in and how the EULA governs the use. Be neat if one could import with or
without conversion to an APRS app.

Cheers, JD

It is also password protected. I think it is v 8.3...

Aha, but presumably every user of those devices also uses some client
software some time in their lives and presumably they might try to use the
same abusive path as they do in their mobiles. Then they would see the
feedback.

Its action-response-feedback that they need to see. No, they wont see it
when the encode their tracker, but if they see it often enough when they
look at FINDU or at a client software, then they will get the message and
the general knowledge base will improve...
