Hi -

I'm new to APRS and very much in "discovery mode". I haven't seen much in
the way of selection when it comes to APRS-related books for newbies. Can
anybody recommend a particular book that is "in print" and tell me where
it's available?

Thanks,

With the help of Dennis...VE6DHW, my problems seem to have been
resolved.

1) Incorrectly formatted port data. I seldom if ever enter this
information using the keyboard but rather use the copy and paste method,
the data being received via email from others and inserted into the
aprsxtra file. Perhaps it was bad info from the source or it was
corrupted in transit. If I edited them some would work. One must use tab
between fields, not spaces.

2) Ports not in service. Most of the ones on my list didn't exist.

3) Lack of activity on some ports.

Thank you to all those who responded.

I recently upgraded from APRS+ 2.2.1 to 2.2.3. I use a KPC3 with version 6
firmware with no problems until I upgraded. The problem I am having is that
I can't transmit (yes, the check box on the main setup is checked and the
TNC is open). When I look at the TNC tab, I see:
   $
Eh?
after a transmit attempt.

Any knowledgeable suggestions? Thanks!

I recently purchased a Kenwood D700A and now looking for an inexpensive GPS
receiver to interface with it. Ideally something in the $100 range. I do
not need a display, as I can display my location on the D700 if I want it.
Anyone have suggestions? Thanks.

Radio Shack digitraveler if you can still find them. I have
several.

Delorme earthmate.

Rand McNally unit.

Deluo units, serial or USB.

Garmin GPS35.

Garmin 16.

Garmin Etrex (has display).

If you want board-level units, there are more options.

You can buy Garmin cables for the Etrex down at West Marine on Marine View
Drive here in Everett. Closest place I know of. Right next to the Navy
Base entrance.

Do any of these have a facility for an external antenna?

Some of them are weatherproof, and the GPS + antenna are integrated in the
unit, so you bolt them on top of your car. No external antenna needed.

The GPS16 and GPS36 are in that category. I run a GPS35.

The Deluo GPS is a mouse-type faceless unit that has been used by many
people on this list. It sells for $90.

Like most of the mouse-type units, it is intended to be used with a laptop
and is provided with a cable that forks at the end away from the GPS. One
side is a standard DB9 serial plug intended to mate with a PC serial port;
the other side is a PS/2 6-pin minidin plug intended to steal 5VDC
operating power from a laptop's external keyboard jack.

If you use it with a D700, tracker or other non-PC application, you will
have to provide a 5VDC @ about 100mA power source for it. [ This is true of
all the mouse-type devices that don't have internal battery packs. ] This
can be a quick cable assemby made from the female end of a PS/2 keyboard
exension cable and a 7805 3-terminal regulator. Or you can buy 5VDC
adapters housed in a car cigarette lighter plug.

       (Page with detailed info)

Note that you can get the unit either with a serial or USB interface cable.
Be sure to get the --SERIAL-- version for use with non-PC devices such as
D700s, TinyTraks, KPC3+ TNCs, etc.

The GPS18 will be shipping shortly, and is a lower cost alternative to the
GPS16

I have run both a GPS16 and GPS35, and I concur with Curt, they are rock
solid. However, both of them are over $100. The GPS18 should meet your
price goals if you can afford to wait a bit.

Nice to know about the GPS18, thanks Jeff. I to have a GPS36(35) which is
handy and am trying to find either the development kit or the magnetic or
suction cup mount(s) for it. Good unit though I believe it has the DR
feature, whatever Garmin calls it, where it smooths or carries on the track
if it loses lock. Haven't noticed much since I've only used it taped up on
a small ship's bridge. ("The handyman's secret weapon...")

If anyone has Digitravelers to part with I'd be interested in one for some
hacking.

Cheers es 73, JD
