I waited long enough and came really close to telling the wife I wanted
one for Christmas. Almost did till' I took a close look at the bills.
Sure glad I did not, as you stated Dale hope some of the features were
fixed.

Well, first of all the National Weather Service launches at least 92 a day
from the US alone, and I think worldwide it's about 900. I've never hear of
one causing damage.

Just for fun, I looked up some statistics on transportation in the US.
Assuming a generous 20-meter average width for a road, 1/122 of the US is
paved roads by area. For freeways it's about 1/1788. Unless my math is way
off... you can check it yourself. There are about 3.7 million kilometers of
paved roads in the US, and about 9.2 million square kilometers of land area.

The moral of the story is, if you want to avoid liability for damage...

Put a National Weather Service sticker on the payload. =]

Dang it!!! I was trying to fix my last message but the Lyris monster ate
it!!!

At STP it is the only component that will burn... For the liquid component
to burn it has to be heated or the pressure must be high... If you are
working in the temperatures or pressures at which gasoline liquid will burn
I don't think you would be worrying about talking on the telephone... :)

(STP = Standard Temperature and Pressure)

Jon, N1MZX, found the balloon today and was able to take a series of
pictures of the situation... No recovery yet, but we're getting there!

Ok, added a new config option to the OpenTracker:

M: Don't use path above: 4999 meters

Some sample output, with the tracker running off an NMEA generator:

aprs: fm N1VG-8 to APOT01 via RELAY WIDE ctl UI pid=F0(Text) len 29
0000 !3457.68N/12025.11W>/A=016400
aprs: fm N1VG-8 to OPNTRK via RELAY WIDE ctl UI pid=77(OPENTRAC) len 25
OpenTRAC decode (25 bytes):.
EID 0x10 len 11: Position: Lat 34.961433 Lon -120.418600 Alt 4999.000000
meters.
EID 0x503 len 2: 309 Kelvins.
EID 0x500 len 4: 12.882365 Volts.

aprs: fm N1VG-8 to APOT01 ctl UI pid=F0(Text) len 29
0000 !3457.68N/12025.11W>/A=016404
aprs: fm N1VG-8 to OPNTRK ctl UI pid=77(OPENTRAC) len 25

meters.

EID 0x500 len 4: 12.882365 Volts.

Note that as soon as it goes above 4999 meters, the RELAY, WIDE path goes
away. I also discovered along the way that this is currently the ONLY way
to tell the config program not to use a path. Gotta fix that.

Who is to predict what is going to happen when? It is wise to follow all
reasonable precautions. I thought I was a goner when I watched the person
next to me reach down to remove the gas nozzle with a burning cigarette in
his hand. To my relief no boom!
