Is the Davis just straight RS-232 data? The only weather hardware I've
personally got on hand is the 1-wire, which runs its own protocol and isn't
the easiest thing to interface with.

Assuming it is just a RS-232 data stream, if someone wants to send me a dump
from one I'd be happy to try writing a WX firmware version for the
OpenTracker when I've got time. Some sample data for the WM-918 would be
nice, too.

I have a WMR-968 (the 918 wireless version which is different than the 918
in a few subtle ways). The reverse engineered protocol for several weather
stations including the 918 and 968, at least what we know, is available
via wx200d.sourceforge.net.

I can provide raw dumps of the data for the 968 if you want, but we only
know about 90% of what the stream is. Just tell me how you want me to
capture it off the serial port and I'll send you a chunk. If you figure
out any of the rest of the stream Im sure the wx200d guys would like to
know :)

It was like this...

I was finishing up the configuration of the new server, was ready to shut
it down and box it up, typed in the shutdown command, hit return, and 15
milliseconds later realized to prompt was wrong, I had just shutdown the
findU primary server!

I've asked the co-lo site to restart it, no idea how long until they
will get the message and get it up again...

Sorry,

Yes, Jihn got the message and had the server restarted before the message
made it through Lyris.

Boy, was that a stupid thing to do!

Glad it worked out OK...

Have you actually found it here, or did you just look on the net and find
this message? The reason that I ask is because there are other links that
point to this message that indicate that it is not there - that it may be
behind the glove box.

Because I have found two locations listed (instrument cluster and glove
box), I decided it was worth the email to see if anyone here has actually
found it, and where.

Thanks and 73 - Matt

If you add the HF AND the VHF marine freq's together... does it equal
200? I see that the YAESU that Bob referred to... also receives
"shortwave" freqs... so maybe they included the HF freqs...

OK, now that I've gotten the right machine shut down ;-) the new server is
packed and waiting for a midnight flight out of the Keys to New Jersey (how
did man live before FedEX?) It will be there tomorrow morning, so when I
wake tomorrow AM I'll switch the www.findu.com domain to point to the
backup server.

I'll be shutting off sendmail by 10AM, at that point emailed positions will
not work (but by shutting off sendmail, they should get delivered when the
new server gets online). There may well be a delay, as the rack rails need
to get assembled and a few drives swapped, but hopefully by this time
tomorrow things will be up and running normally.

Unless I screw up (and after today, I'm not making any bets!) most people
should not notice any interruption. I hope.

I'll let you know when the swap is complete, or if there are any hitches...

Thanks,

Steve K4HG

Nope. THey are all listed freqs in the 156 to 161 MHz range...
Maybe wishful thinking on the part of Yeasu translators... Bob

Yaseu makes one HT that does Marine VHF, MURS, and FRS (HX470S) and a newer
one minus the MURS (HX471S). Maybe they mean all those services put
together?
They also make ANOTHER unit that has the same chassis and does aircraft (AM
mode) and 2 meters (VXA700S).
Why the #### can't they put these together and do Marine, Air, 2 meter,
MURS, and FRS?
I *think* if you get a VX7R you can open it up and do all of the above, but
it wouldn't be legal on anything but ham frequencies.

I've created a new Yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/opentracker/
for discussion and support on the OpenTracker project. Anyone already
involved with the beta testing should have received an invitation.

If you expressed interest in beta testing and didn't get an email from me,
let me know off-list or join the group. Most of the current batch of boards
are already spoken for, but I've got a couple left.

Subject: VX-2R Tiny HT HF SSB?
From: Bob Bruninga <bruninga@usna.edu>
Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 18:41:08 -0500 (EST)

The teeney-tiny VX-2R HT has HF receive but AM only.

What we need is somebody to make a little 450 KHz external BFO oscillator
on a watch battery in something the size of a matchbook. Then just hold it
on the back of the radio and you get a BFO for tuning in CW, SSB and
PSK-31.

I just tried a sig gen using 10 mW at 450 KHz into a 3 turn coil near the
base of the radio. It works fine. Great little market for someone to make
'em and sell em!

From: Bob Bruninga <bruninga@usna.edu>

Argh. Finished tuning up a nice dual band J-pole antenna and shoved it up
inside its PVC housing. Yuk. I knew I would have to re-tweak it for the
change in dialectric but I never thought it was 10 to 12%!

Basically had to completely rebuild the antenna and re-cut everything.
Resonance in air at 146 MHz dropped to 132 MHz inside the PVC. So the
right way is to not even waste time in air. Just slide it into the PVC for
every step in the tweaking process.

Also in looking at J-pole designs i found on the internet, I was amazed
that everyone of them was fed what I think is wrong. They hooked the
shield of the coax to the stub and center to the radiator. Sure that
works, but it is very vulerable to even the slightest change in how the
coax hangs.

Its better to take advantage of the inherent grounded nature of the
vertical and run the coax alongside the main pole and keep it geometrically
close to that grounded part of the antenna, then run the center conductor
over to the "J".

This is far less vulnerable to how the coax hangs..

Just relearning old lessons...
For what it's worth...
