You really must have a hardware problem because this doesn't sound right at
all. Unless you mean the application is crashing rather than the operating
system?

At work we have systems that run full load 24/7 without crashing. I'm
personally responsible for machines that have been up well over a year (one
was about to hit three years when the UPS batteries failed during a
self-test) and this isn't unusual at all. And I really do run Linux and its
not just something I've heard from somebody else.

The only times I've had Linux actually crash have been hardware related
failures or experimenting with experimental kernels. This is in 7+ years of
daily linux use.

FWIW,

-Jim KB0THN

PS - run memtest86 on your Linux machine and see if you have bad memory.
This is a common cause of system instability.

I've deployed and administered Linux systems since kernel .9x

I use both Windows and Linux (and Solaris) every day. I'm typing this
message from a Windows 2000 computer and this email will go though my
Linux server (Sun SPARC).

Linux is very reliable, Windows 2000 is the most reliable Windows OS I've
used.

Both OS's have their advantages and disadvantages. Use what works best for
you. OS choices are very personal. I don't want to start a flame war. A
choice for using one or the other is fine with me.

A good resource, pick the features that are important to you:

Hullo Adi,

Curt's answered re some of Xastir's capabilities. I haven't got Xastir
going, yet, and look to implement Canadian topographic maps from Toporama
in it when I do. These raster maps are the starting point for the paper
topos NRCan (Natural Resources Canada) publishes with not quite all the
detail, however still very good.

Raster maps and their .inf files from UI-View may be used in Xastir and
combined with vector maps and overlays for multi-layer depiction of data.
Remove a layer, add a layer, have a few there and choose which to view at
any given moment. Ask on the Xastir list for more info.

UI-View will allow for a moving map display centred on a station you
select, yourself, someone else.

Depending on the size of the image file for a map or orthoimage (big
file=slow!) using this on a P100 may be painful. I've got a wee Toshiba
Libretto P75 with UI-View 1.93 on it and a PIII 700 with 1.97, which I'll
be updating to 1.99. On the Libretto it may just kill you waiting for it to
load however once loaded, if you don't have to scroll the map/chart/image,
it's okay! I'm just as happy with fairly basic maps now for quite a few
applications having used APRSdos/data quite a bit now. Most of the time one
is just looking for a thematic relative position/disposition of
stations/objects anyway. Using Xastir with a windows manager rather than a
desktop environment (right Curt?) may work as well or better. i.e. don't
load KDE or GNOME use ICE XFCE FVWM... ask on Xastir list. So...

I've used Toporama maps for a couple of years in UI-View, making my own
..inf files based on the map sheet info and corner co-ordinates. I found it
just as quick and more accurate to make the file by hand since I didn't
have anything that would grab meta data and do that for me (would've had to
match it to the map image file anyway..) and it seemed easier and more
accurate than using UI-View's capability of creating said .inf file as each
sheet has known corner co-ordinates. The associations for a sheet's
co-ordinates will jump out at the astute user when downloading them. I plan
on posting the BC and AB .inf files, not the images, sometime Real Soon Now.

At the latitudes we're working with the 1:250,000 sheets are one degree of
latitude ('high') and two degrees of longitude ('wide'). Here's an example
from 092b.inf file which matches the name I gave to the map image file
092b.gif:

124.0.0W, 49.0.0N
122.0.0W, 48.0.0N
NTDB 92B Victoria BC 1:250,000 <-- this shows in UI-View screen title
;Datum NAD83/WGS84 - Canadian Gov't update xx
;map from TOPORAMA @ http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/
;read Use Agreement file either at http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/ or
;EULACdnmaps.htm in the .zip file
;.inf file by VE3/VE6/VA7OTC@rac.ca

The 1:50,000 sheets are 15' of latitude by 30'/half a degree of longitude.
This is from 092b06.inf matching 092b06.gif:

123.30.0W, 48.30.0N
123.0.0W, 48.15.0N
NTS 92B/06 Victoria BC 1:50,000
;Datum NAD83/WGS84 - Canadian Gov't update xx
;map from TOPORAMA @ http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/
;read use agreement file either at http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/ or
;EULACdnmaps.htm in the .zip file
;.inf file by VE3/VE6/VA7OTC@rac.ca

I've named my map files using the Cdn NTS four and six figure map number
convention for the 1:250k & 1:50k scales respectively. Good as any. Added
the 'o' for Ortho images i.e. 092c09o.gif/inf and the _40 for the percent
of the original I've rescaled an image. Do your own thing.

Cdn topo map sheets, paper and digital, are now being produced in NAD83 so
GPS/APRS users should have no/little problem. Both NAD83 and WGS84 are
apparently based on the Geodetic Reference System 1980, (GRS80) ellipsoid
so functionally the same. All Cdn topos and nautical charts used to be on
NAD27, for the most part.

One thing that is easy to do with these raster images is create copies of
different sizes. For example, if I liked the coverage of the 1:250,000
Victoria, BC sheet however wanted more of it on the screen at one time, in
other words wished to reduce the scale, I could reduce the size of the
image (in Irfanview in this case) save as a new file name 092b_50.gif so I
could see it was a 50% size version (it also requires a unique name) and
copy/save the associated 092b.inf as 092b_50.inf. The .inf file is exactly
the same in content as the original it's copied from in all but name. The
name matches the new image.

http://toporama.cits.nrcan.gc.ca/toporama_en.html
For those who haven't heard of Toporama, on the site are 1:250,000 and
1:50,000 scale Cdn topos plus some Orthoimages, usually composite/adjusted
'aerial' views from some form of remote sensing. These are referenced in
the same area/sheet manner as topo map sheets in the National Topographic
System. So NTDBs are the maps and the Orthoimages are listed as such. There
are some good tutorials on NTS, the UTM Projection and Symbols [ ;{D ] on
the site. ...Not often one sees something named National, not Canadian, for
a Canadian reference/organisation/publication, also have it not be a US
publication. :{D

My PPP connection is off right now and I can't access some parts of the
site well in LYNX so I can't see if the 1:100,000 sheet is downloadable as
an image (it's there for ref so you can select the other scale sheets for
d/l from it).

From the site one can also access Geogratis which has other free Cdn data.
Hoping to be able to use some of this in Xastir.
http://www.geogratis.gc.ca/

For GIS, map and database junkies check out the some other parts of the site:
http://www.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/inter/products_e.html

There's also a corresponding French language section, just truncate the URL
to start in French or select an NRCan logo link on most pages.

I'll stop here!
