I run contiguous street maps and/or contiguous topo maps from my vehicle on
a P133 w/64MB RAM. I've also done it with a PP200 w/32MB RAM.
Linux/Xastir. Street maps are Tiger in Shapefile format (vector). Topo
maps are USGS DRG geoTIFF topo (raster).

I am looking at doing this with the Toporama topo maps I have in gif
format.

A few tricks for running Linux on low-memory systems:
Run FVWM2 window manager, or if you can stomach it, perhaps something like
TWM. Don't run Gnome, KDE, or any of the other memory-hungry window
managers.
Edit /etc/inittab to comment out several of the virtual consoles. I
usually run two. You'll have to reboot to see that change take effect (an
unusual requirement for Linux!).
Get rid of any daemons that you don't need. Use "ps -aux" or "top" to see
what daemons are running in memory. Uninstall uneeded daemons or change
your configs so that they don't get started.
Check with "top" and/or "ps -aux" again to verify that you have only
necessary daemons running. "free" and/or "top" should tell you have much
memory and swap you have available.

Subject: Findu and the find-us query

I am having good results using the find-us query:
( http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find-us.cgi?call=kd5xb-2 ), but when trying
to see more than one station using this query, I don't get exactly what I
was looking for:
I'm seeing only one plot point, but it has all three calls on it. Does
this query not quite support what I'm trying to do, or perhaps I have the
syntax wrong?
Tnx es 7 3

'telinit q' should reload inittab and not require a reboot...

If the APRSworld server allows multiple posits I don't know the syntax,
I'll support it if there is the capability. This is the reason I'd like to
have a general purpose map server, that way it could be used for any sort
of drawing specific to a given client program.
I've also converted the find.cgi to use the APRSworld maps in a trial,
response time seems reasonable, though there are a few problems.
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=K4HG-8
This shows that the land/water interface needs to be tweaked, at least here
in the Keys, and this shows that detail seems to be missing in the Miami
area:
http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=K4HG-5
Also, though there seems to be an land outline for the world, country
boundaries are not there, I'd think that data would be available, and would
make European maps look much better...

What is the most efficient raster format to use with Xastir? The images I
have are in gif format. I understand Xastir can deal with gif images on
the fly but would there be an advantage to convert these images (using
ImageMagick) in bulk before using them with Xastir?

All this is possible, just needs to be requested.
For example I just added borders to the countries.

I'll need to lookup what it is.

Machine seems to be holding its own. Most maps are comming out of cache,
which lends credit to my analysis that much of the maps requested are
redundant.

This is exactly what will happen when 1:1M scale maps are laid on top of
more detailed maps. NOTHING WILL LINE UP. This will probably be the case
with WinAPRS, dosAPRS, and some of the palmAPRS maps as well.

Not sure. I mostly use vector maps except for the DRG topo's and internet
map images.
You could play with them a bit to see which types take longer to load. Pick
a very large image and then time it in various formats.
