ARGH, it was late... and I was excited.
No, the kenwood does not read the text. It uses a lookup table. You
have to send it %XX and it will speak its XX'th word or letter.. or
something like that.

Wanting to power my etrex off of the serial port on the laptop. Seems to
be about 8.5 to 9 volts. Manual said that power cords drop voltage down
to 3 volts. I know the older models are more forgiving. Anyone doing
this? Can I just hack off the Garmin supplied cable....and the extra
power wire will be in there ;-)
Thanks,
Robert

FOrget the bug.
It was operator error.
I was using a THD7 and it boots up with its own callsign which was
different than my PC's callsign. So when I uplinked the WRECK object, it
actually went out under the TNC's call.

Thus when it came back, it was not my PC's callsign and so it "replaced"
my uplinnked object with the other one and canceled mine.

CAUTION! This is not the first time in the last 12 years this has
happened. It can happen to you too... so always make sure your TNC is
using the same call as your PC... The APRS software should do this for
you, but sometimes they get out of sync. Especially if you just grab a D7
and plug it into a running PC...

All I can say is this , it is mighty strange that for what appears to be
best software package out there for APRS, e.g. UIVIEW , that one has to be
psychic to find it on the TAPR web site.

It is painfully easy to find all other software packages.

Just exactly why cant UIVIEW get its own entry next to APRSPLUS and WINAPRS ?

Thank you for all your explanations. I think Steve has done a good job
with the FindU site. If everyone agreed to the same set of icons for their
programs/sites there might be more compatability. I just wanted to make
sure I was sending a correct format.

Hi,

I am getting ready to fire up aprs on my Linux repeater PC. This time I
thought about not only running aprsd but to also have digi capabilities.
Does anyone have a document describing how to get digined and aprsd
palying together on Linux, maybe even with a Baycom modem as a bonus?

Thanks,
Adi

Everyone has agreed to the same set of icons, those in the spec. There a
few changes as documented on Bobs web site, and often a lively discussion
about changes and additions, but the set is as specified in the spec.

The problem is two-fold. First, Bob does not like the term icon, because
that derives from the graphic GUI world which dosAPRS is not a part of, he
uses icons of a single color, which changes to indicate other information.

The second problem is simple a matter of grunt work. Most of the other APRS
clients use icon sets derived from the Sproul's set first released with
MacAPRS many years ago. I used it with permission in javAPRS, where the
entire set is encoded into single GIFs for primary and alternate sets.
Others have used the javAPRS as a starting point. findU uses a set of GIFs
given me by Brent, which I believe started out from the Sprouls, but I
could be wrong.

So over the years, especially in the dark time before standardization,
little errors crept into these ison sets and were never fixed. Icon editing
is a painful thing, especially when you have a hundred plus to edit.

So what is needed is someone with some basic graphic skills to take the
icon sets that exist, and clean them up to match the spec, and release sets
in different sizes and formats. That would be a huge contribution to the
APRS community...

Check out John Ackermann's page at http://www.febo.com/packet/linux-ax25/.
I haven't run digi_ned myself, but it shouldn't be too hard. That's the
nice part about packet on Linux.. with the AX.25 stack, you don't need to
worry about splitting out serial ports and stuff.

One of the projects I've got on the back burner is a prepackaged load for a
digi_ned installation on a Soekris Engineering single-board PC with 128 megs
of flash, and maybe a Baycom-style modem that'll fit in the case. The idea
is to get rid of some of these Kantronics digis and replace them with
something smarter.
