Thanks for your prompt response, Eric. Yes I realize that wide2-2, etc.
by itself won't work. I was trying to save myself some typing by leaving
out gate. :-)

BTW, I received your response before I got my posting, in fact I haven't
got it yet. Doesn't make sense!

I am setting up a Igate at our local 911 center but have hit a snag. They
are running what ID's as web-cache server and firewall for security and I
can't seem to get WinAPRS to pass thru it? Site sysop has given me a
user/passcode for the Igate giving it just enough access priviledges needed
but I don't know how to configure the software to do it???
Has anyone else had this problem and solved it? HOW?

WinAPRS supports a telnet proxy as mentioned in the docs (that is the
reason that the central servers use port 23), see APRServe.txt in your
WinAPRS folder for details.

The original solution to this problem was to connect to a server that
provided data on a port normally reserved for other things, like the telnet
port, port 23. I don't know if there are servers that still provide data
on that port though.
A lot of software has support for proxy servers. Xastir doesn't. I don't
know about other APRS apps.
It's possible you might be able to find another piece of software that
would do the proxy for you, and provide a normal socket on your machine for
WinAPRS to connect to.

On this morning's pass I heard my own traffic digipeated sevral times
using a 2 meter 1/4 antenna from my car. I also heard AD6NH.

This Saturday (01/24/04) I'll be up at 5,800 feet in Southern California
and will have another 1/4 wave setup with Igate for the whole day. If you
can, send up some traffic.
My setup is a Kenwood D700 and UI-View path: APRS,KE6QMD,SGATE,WIDE

Well, from the beginning we were quite opposed to anything longer than
ONE hop after a local HF gateway, becusae it extended the QRM out of the
local area and beign 2 hops away, it became irritating to people to have
stuff coming in from one or two states away, and just not part of the
local HAM community. Strangers, so to speak.
It then becomes impossible to resolve QRM issues when everyone is dealing
with strangers instead of data being injected locally by one of their
own. Thus the rule was, that HF packets should not be transmitted with
moer than one generic hop at the other end. This keeps ARPS manageable.
It doesnt help you, but you can see how it would affect everyone else...

It's not likley that it will work through an http proxy.
Part of my work is to manage proxy servers for very secure environments.
We'll often allow traffic out through the firewalls after doing some
analysis. We'll often allow it and will "lock" the traffic down to specific
destination hosts and ports.
Can you ask the firewall administrators to review your requirements?

Thats what I have done but he has asked me what we need to do to get the
software to do its thing, meaning how do I tell WinAPRS to hit the proxy
server?
I have activated the line in APRSserv.txt that says proxie but it doesn't
work.

Glenn,
I believe digi_ned will rewrite the unproto paths for you if you set it
up right.
