Subject: Vehicle Power to a Tracker

Again, many thanks to the list for good leads for information in the past.

Now a new request for info... I have a bunch of self contained trackers -
that will be used to track racing sailboats over a racecourse that's only a
few square miles (think Americas Cup... but more racing boats... and much
smaller and cheaper sailboats).

The trackers are self-contained on the racecourse... and the integral
battery is sized for two days of races that my local Sailing Club does once
a month.

I'd like to use the same trackers for "public" events that need APRS... but
I'm no longer comfortable with the longevity of the battery... so I'd like
to have an "add on" circuit... so that I can keep the integral tracker
battery - - charged during the "public" event. I don't want to go through
the "kabuki dance" of cigarette lighter to battery charger to the integral
(gel cell) battery.... rather it seems that there ought to be a circuit
that has a (ugh) cigarette lighter plug on one end for input... and some
sort of current limiter/protective device - with the output being connected
to the integral gel cell battery. It'll keep the gel cell charged, won't
add garbage on the power (the TNC and xcvr are tied to the gel cell), and
will be "relatively" cheap, robust, and (hopefully) simple.

Also means I can use a tracker to/from races - and use the same device on a
racing boat....

Recommendations are solicited...

As always

Thanks in advance....

Since these are one-time events, I'd run them on D cell Alkaline Batteries
from Sams'club or wherever you can get them cheap.. For the same
size/mass as Nicads or Gel cells, you will get 5 times the life. EIght
"D" alkalines is over 15 amp hours and are smaller and lighter than
Nicads or Gel cells.

But this is only cost effective if the "using organizaiton" is willing to
buy the batteries. Their choice.. If you have to foot the bill, then
ignore this message...

How about two diodes?

Gel Cell --------->|--------------|
                                      |---------------------- Tracker
13.8 volts ------->|--------------|

And for a trickle charge of the battery, run a resistor from 12volts to the
Gel cell isolated with a diode.

The only "gotcha" here is the gel cell voltage needs to be less then the
supply voltage, so if the vehicle is running, that is not a problem. If not
running, then the circuit will draw power from whoever is supplying the
highest voltage.

Or an appropriately sized 12v light. It'll limit the current to an
acceptable range and give an visual indication of charging.

I'm looking forward to replacing the old Motorola automotive power plugs
with Anderson powerpoles. That will make it much easier to interconnect
batteries with charging sources such as the car or the base Astron. A 12v
light patch cable will be easy to put in line for times I need it such as
charging a seriously discharged gelcel.

Any one seen an on the glass dual band 142 to 158 MHZ and 406 to 469 MHZ
antenna. Wide band would be helpful since I would like to use this with my
D700 (APRS) and sometimes a commercial rig without drawing attention to my
car. Would like to look like a cell telephone antenna. Thanks.

It's part of the network .. an *important* part of the network. Not every
mobile in the area can hit the local WIDE (unless you live in *very* flat
country .. most don't) Acting as a RELAY to get signals into the network is
always important.

Does anyone have a .pdf of the KPC3 manual (NOT KPC3+) with firmware
version 6.0.

I don't have one and was wondering if it did callsign substitution. If
so what is the command ? I know it does not have more than 1 alias but
it does have the GPS feature set.
