Scott,
It can also be important in the car. I've wired up trackers (TT-IIs) that
used the second personality as the operating mode when the car is on
(accessory power lead to relay for grounding the pin). When the car is off
the relay drops out and the transmit rate is greatly reduced (1.5-2mins
when on/moving, 30-45mins when off) in what would normally be the "primary"
mode.
This all works great until you park the car at the airport and head out for
a 2-week trip and forget to turn the system off. (DOH!!!). What you
propose would be perfect for this. I'm guessing you would intend for it to
operate as an LCD (low voltage disconnect) to shut things down in the case
of low bus voltage.
I'll be doing the tracker install in the XYLs car next weekend with a TT3.
I'll likely do it this way, but use the control pin output to only power up
the GPS/radio a few minutes before the TX time in the slow transmit mode.

Bob,
I don't think a change to an existing APRS construct could be considered
backwards compatible. In particular, a change to the formatting of
location information should be avoided, IMO.
If there is truly a need for sending new information, we should consider
adding something to the comment field rather than modifying the existing
location fields. This would be backwards compatible since the Spec permits
almost anything in this field. Highly unlikely that ANY software would
break unless there was a conflict with an existing comment field construct.

Yes, and in all my projects I use a 10k/2.4k voltage divider and then the
digital count turns out to equal the voltage in tenths of a volt. In
other words, a digital count of 138 means 13.8 volts.
The exact ratio is not exactly 10k/2.4k but close enough using those
standard resistors. I think it is within 0.2 volts or so. And it is good
up to 25.5 volts... You can parallel some megohom resistors to tweak it
exactly if you like...
This makes it possible to watch the telemetry from PCsat for example
without having a decoder program... (at least for the battery voltage
terms)...

Yes, agreed. it all depends on compatibility. Although N,S,E,W were
required, my code always accepted lower case, beacuse back in the early
days (and still now), there were always digi owners that mistakenly
entered lower case for those characters, and I decided that accepting both
cases was prudent.
My big concern is the Kenwoods. If they dont accept it, then forget the
idea. (Mine is still off with my wife... who took my car today...)
So I cant test it...

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the character that represents
a STAR (Digi) with a R in it for RELAY? I am getting a TNC ready and need to
get the BTEXT set up.
Thanks,
Rich

Place an R after the N in Lat, and a # after the W in Lon
Robbie (I think), ;-)

Hey Rich!
A 'star' Digi can not have an O'ly.

I tested the D700 and it accepts either case of N/S. So the reports so
far on the availabiility of this bit are:
1) Accepts U/L case for N/S: APRSdos, Kenwoods
2) Does not accept and would impact present users: ... tbd
3) Other: FINDU does not accept it. But being a single point,
could be changed if determined to be in best interest of community.
Again, not forcing the issue, just gathering data on the availability of
this bit for backwards compatibility... So if you can test your favorite
software, let us know.
Test would be !4044.44n/10555.55w-Test
SPEC says: !4044.44N/10555.55W-Test
but does your software decode it?

Its not a proposed solution to anything. It is a bit of data.

Nor should you.

And that is a "bit" of information that could be of value to others...

And there is no problem with that. This bit of information is not used
as some big-brother discriminator.. it is only a bit of info..

Again, it is not a proposed solution to anything, and there is no problem
I am trying to fix. I'm just curious when I sit at my APRS screen and
want to engage in some APRS activity, its nice to know who else is sitting
at their screen and actively doing something too.

Use the # symbol and put the "R" in place of the usual "/" lat/long
separator...

If thats the case then I,for one, am certainly against such a change.
