Subject: PayPal to AMSAT for APRS
From: Bob Bruninga <bruninga@usna.edu>
Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2004 09:43:25 -0500 (EST)
X-Message-Number: 7

On Thu, 8 Jan 2004, Arthur H Feller advised that AMSAT now can accept
PAYPAL contributions to the ECHO Satellite (that can support APRS ops):

>PayPal [is now] in place at AMSAT...Merchant name is: AMSAT.
>Email address is martha@amsat.org
>Phone if you need it is (301) 589-6062

They need $64K before launch in late March

When this high-tech digital AMSAT makes it reliably to orbit, we will have
a nice long term tansponder to finally give us reliable global
connectivity. Part of that connectivity can be APRS, but the degree to
which it will support APRS is not just based on how loudly we demonstrate
our application, but probably more so on how much we contribute...

In space and on Earth,
what goes around
comes around, etc...

Yes RF causes many problems with WX stations. With my Davis it would spike
the Temp every time I transmitted. This is something everyone with a WX
stations should check on.

Thanks for the link. I just checked out my call and had no bad packets.
This will come in handy from time to time. And Thanks for the time you put
into creating it.

Had anyone contacted W2WSF on this issue? It would be helpful to find out
why he is transmitting these errors.

This station is almost directly down the street from me. It is not
going out on RF, but appears to be something incorrectly setup. I want
to find and help this station, but a drive to the exact location turns
up a swamp and no antennas or computers.

Please if you are in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area check and see if
you recognize anything of this. If you are not, any suggestions how to
find this?

To try to describe the Global reach of APRS via handheld's, I sketched the
following image:

  Global APRS: http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/echo/GlobalAPRS.bmp

If there is a better single sketch that trys to depict the global reach
of APRS, I'd be interested in seeing it or using it. Thanks. Comes in
handy during APRS talks...

P.S., I added it to the middle of my ECHO web page.

And just a reminder, you can setup a SatGate server to connect to
socal.aprs2.net:10150 to send the data. You will not receive any data on
that port unless a message is sent directly to your station. That way, you
effectively committ zero download bandwidth for your SatGate. It's a good
choice for unmonitored SatGates or people who have a SatGate as a secondary
APRS program. Contact me if you need help setting up your SatGate!

Afilter has its uses, but to simply restrict the amount of data received and
displayed, the java filtered ports are much better, because they filter the
data at the source, thus reducing the amount of data your computer has to
process in the first place. Afilter, unless it has changed a lot since I
last used it, still takes all the data from whatever server you connect to,
and then filters it. That's a lot of work (and data bandwidth) for no
benefit IF all you need is to restrict the rx and displayed data.

Afilter will do a lot more things and do them well...but if you don't need
them, then you are better off with the java filtered ports.

Maybe we need an APRS format defined that means "I have no positioning
device, track me by my vicinity to the nearest digipeater... my path is
WIDE,WIDE2-2"... Maybe placing "NOGPS" at the beginning of the status
text?

But APRSdos does not need this, becuse it will automatically make such a
vicinity plot on any station for which it has no posit.

I have a Rand McNally GPS designed for sitting on the dash board that I
use for APRS. For a better view, I would like mount this on the ladder
rack of my truck. The case is actually pretty well designed, but I
thought it wise to spray the board with an epoxy first. We routinely
install metering and telemetry equipment with this spray on the circuit
cards, it costs another $10 or so when you order the product, and seems
to be worth it.

So...what is it? And can I just get a spray can and apply it to the GPS
board for some protection?
