Jeff,
AFilter is much more than an APRS IS filter. It provides the user the
ability to filter the APRS IS via an extensive GUI and to log desired
packets to disk.
The logging capability is used often used for specialized purposes such as
weather logging and analysis, telemetry logging etc.
You can set up multiple GeoFiltered areas to limit the feed to those
geographical areas of interest. You can pass satellite packets or an
unlimited number of specified stations from outside your GeoFiltered areas.
Very easy to pass and log NWS-Warnings, Watches, Advisories, for specific
NWS stations and /w/w/a types. You can pass and log all wx station packets,
or just those in your GeoFiltered areas.
AFilter is bi-directional. It can optionally filter and log outgoing as
well as incoming packets. You can create APRS Objects, Ping APRS stations
and ping IP addresses with AFilter. It has a built in Chat program that
works with AChat servers.
I don't think that you can compare AFilter with the Java filtered ports
since it provides a full GUI, extensive logging capabilities and other
features that are simply not possible to obtain from a full or filtered
server.
When used in conjunction with AFilterX, it can also serve the filtered data
to multiple clients. This capability allows users to set up specialized
servers such as SatGates, Wx only servers, etc. The AFilter / AFilterX
installation requires a total of about 2.5MB of HD space. It is compiled,
not interpreted code, and was designed to work with Win98 and above.
BTW, the very first Citizens Weather server used AFilter and AFilterX to
accept CW station weather and pass it to the APRS IS.
ALogger provides capabilities similar to AFilter, but was designed solely
for logging purposes.
AFilter, AFilterX and ALogger can be downloaded from http://www.wa6oft.com

Subject: Access restriction to software

Hi all,
I have encountered a unanounced restriction to the use of Garmin Maps in my
Garmin GPS units. I ordered and received a BLUE CHART CD from Garmin
covering the East Coast of the USA. See :
www.garmin.com/cartography/index.html
At this site it is very clearly stated you can only purchase a unlock code
for ONE (1) REGION. Fine: Great: understood: and precisely what I wanted.
The GULF of MEXICO REGION! (chart contains 3 regions) But nowhere in this
site does it imply/state/grant the ability to download these charts to more
than ONE (1) GPS unit!!! After fuming with the Garmin rep, their position
is the "one unlock code covers EVERYTHING!" my position is that is
misleading advertising.
Now I have absolutely no problem with protecting software from piracy. I
support having restrictions on users, however I firmly believe there should
be a clearly written notice beforehand on sales brochures and on
installation instructions specifying precisely how many times the software
can be downloaded.
To add insult to injury after complaining to several of my boating friends,
one sent me to a dealer site who handles Garmin Blue Charts.
http://www.vitmarine.com/gar-bluechart.html
This dealer specificly states you get ONE (1) download to data cards for
use in Garmin GPS units! Now why couldn't this point be made on the Garmin
site?
My explanation for being so uptight on this situation is I have 2 Garmin
GPS units on my boat. One is installed in the Nav station below. The other
is secured in a quick disconnect mount on the steering pedestal in the
cockpit. In case of an emergency and need to abandon ship, my crew or I
grab the GPS and handheld radio from the pedestal! Obviously the GPS unit
you look at the most and need when you leave the boat should have the Blue
Chart stored in memory. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess which
GPS I downloaded the charts to. Hey the laptop was within a foot of it!
Swapping units is not a good alternative due to cabling and external
antenna capability.
OK take this information as a warning and don't get caught like I did.

As stated in my post, javAPRSFilter supports all of the various filter
types that AFilter does, and then some. I want to ensure that people
are not mislead into thinking that AFilter supports more filters or
filter combinations than javAPRSFilter. The filtering capabilities are
virtually identical between the two.

According to Garmin's website you can get a second unlock code :
http://shop.garmin.com/cartography/mapsource/default.asp
"If you own two GARMIN GPS units, you are allowed to obtain a second unlock
code for the same region at no additional charge. Simply repeat the unlock
process for the second unit. This agreement provides a one-user license, and
it is illegal to share this data with others."

More than 10 years ago I obtained a license for using a Marine VHF radio
on my boat while stationed in Hawaii.
I'm having no luck finding the current marine license application
information on the FCC web site (I know my old one has to have expired).
So the issue is... what is the process to re-apply for Marine
License/Station... especially for boats that will be in international
use.
Sorry for the off-sig - but hey... I may need to send back position data
to the APRS-IS !!!!
TNX in advance...

Would like to hear from those of you out there that are using APRS with
their Skywarn StormSpotters. Specifically, I'd like to know:
1. Are you using dedicated trackers or through your voice repeaters?
2. If you're using dedicated trackers, what have you found that works
consistently? What have you found that causes problems?
3. If you're using APRS through your voice repeaters, what happens when
people transmit before the posit can be gotten from the previous operator?
4. If you're using APRS through your voice repeaters, how are you doing
it (i.e. taking the packet audio off the rptr rx freq or just letting it go
out in the open on the rptr tx freq)?
Tnx es 73,
