Happy New Year.
I read on a APRS site that a MFJ 1270c tnc can be used for APRS
digipeater.
I can not remember where I saw the mod. at.
Has anyone seen this?
Thanks

By itself in stock condition, it will only be capable of being a dumb
RELAY digi. It's OEM internal firmware supports only standard packet
digipeating and has no APRS-specific smarts (i.e. WIDEn-N call-sign
substitution digipeating and duplicate supression).
To give it this capability, you will have to either:
o Run it in KISS mode in conjunction with a program on a PC such as
DigiNed (a DOS program that will run off a floppy on even an old '286
clunker) or UI-View32 (a comprehensive Windows-based do-everything APRS
application that also implements a full WIDEn-N digipeater capability).
o Give the TNC a "brain transplant" by replacing it's standard
firmware EPROM with one containing UI-DIGI firmware. UI-DIGI transforms
standard TNC2 clones such as the MFJ-127x series into a dedicated smart,
stand-alone (no PC required) APRS digipeater with WIDEn-N, TRACEn-N,
duplicate supression and more.

For the software to burn into the EPROM:
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/msavegna/uidigi-e.htm
Also, a site with suggested settings and explanations:
http://www.qsl.net/n8deu/uidigi_eprom_settings.htm
We've been running a digi that I programmed using this stuff for over a
year now, so it can't be THAT hard!! ;-)
Hope this helps

OK, sounds fine to me. SOunds like your group has thought it out and your
network can handle the load.
thanks

Concerning IGate PATHS:
THe fundamental "rule" that we develped back in 1994 or so when we began
using HFgates to inject HF packets into local LANs was that NO GATE should
(in general) inject any other traffic beyond ONE wide. THis kept any QRM
or inteference clearly within the local area of that GATE and also made it
easy to always find the SOURCE of the extra gated traffic if needed.
If GATES begin sending data via longer hops, they are then beginning to
add traffic load into areas that are not under their direct observation
and which can have siginficantly different traffic patterns. Thus, it is
just not good practice nor courteous to GATE stuff beyond one WIDE
(unless, of course the GATE has the concurance of those operators in all
affected areas).
Also, IGATES in general are there to support end to end global messaging.
But this is a very weak path. Even if there is only ONE digi on each end,
the end-to-end "RF" path then is 4 hops forward and 8! hops for the ACK
success. Each additional hop on each end just makes the probability of
success vanish to zero. Its amazing when it works at all.
Having IGates using paths of WIDE,WIDE or longer gives users the false
sense of linking large areas into the Global APRS-IS, but it is a false
impression because the reliability is so low. If we want better IGate
coverage, then the better way to do it with better reliability is to put
in more IGates with shorter paths.
One's local area may be different. But doing stuff over multiple hops is
in general, to the first order concept, just not a good approach to
reliable APRS network design...

Bob,
While you're in a programming mood, how about incorporating Smart Beacon?
Hope you (and the rest of the list) have a Happy New Year!

APRSdos has always had a 1st-order level of smarts in that it only sends a
beacon at the original rate if the position has changed. Whenever the
position stays still (whether GPS, or FIXED, or an OBJECT or whatever), if
it has not moved since the last report, then the TIME to the next beacon
is doubled.
This is the decaying algorithm that was fundamental to ALL aprs
information, not just position data. That is, new data is refresehed more
often than old data and old data eventually decays out of the system.
Its too bad that I could not get all the other clinet programs to
implement this fundamental APRS function.
But yes, I will consider addingsome more smarts when I get the chance..

Is there an easy way on Findu to show (on a map) what route my packets are
taking to get from my station to an IGATE? Yes, I can read the raw packet,
but a map showing the route would be helpful, in my opinion.
Thanks,
