Does anyone know if the smart beaconing approach been applied to WX
stations?

What is to stop someone from running WIDE7-7 and beaconing every 30 seconds
without SmartBeaconing? Nothing...
It's all in user education. SmartBeaconing works good, but it must be setup
by the user (like anything else) to work well in the area that it is used.
For example, WIDE3-3 isn't always the best choice of paths for most areas.
Increasing the wait time may be a wise move, thus decreasing the number of
packets sent. Or maybe increasing the minimum turn. There are a lot of
variables to play with. My point being that there isn't anything in APRS in
general to prevent someone from "deluging the RF network". It's the user
that makes that choice.
If someone wants it to work right, they should try adjusting the variables
to fit their needs. They shouldn't run with excessive paths, which is only
relevant to the area you're in (hopefully this won't open a new can of
worms).
SmartBeaconing in most applications isn't the default. It's not in Xastir,
it's not in the TinyTraks. I don't remember if it is in the HamHUDs or
not - it's been a while since I initilized mine from scratch.
It works as intended - it updates a user's position more often as they turn,
keeping an accurate representation of their position (or estimated position)
on a map than a typical beacon every minute or two. How aggressive it is
set up is all up to the user, like any APRS beacon.

I remember talks (maybe it was in my WinAPRS days... but don't tie it to
that, PLEASE!!!) years ago about having a weather station tranmit its'
information more frequently when certain measurements got high enough (or
low enough). Like this... If the wind speed got above x or the barametric
pressure got below y, then transmit data every 1 minute intead of 5 minutes
to get more up-to-date data out there faster.
Does that make sense (it is still early)?

Hello, I think I've found an AVL frequency but not sure. Can anyone identify
this: http://www.neaham.org/whatisit.wav
I've been trying to figure out what kind of data burst this is. If you can
help send me an email off list please.
Thanks

Yes WinAPRS has the ability to send out WX if there is a change
greater than some set amount.
To set this, it is under SETTINGS / WEATHER. The dialog box has area
callews ALARMS. There is a delta value for change in temperature.
If this delta is exceeded, then it will output wx report without waiting.

My comments were almost more about "software designer education" as the
first step. The key there is to turn the feature off by default. How many
things have we seen hit the amateur airwaves set up EXACTLY the wrong way,
by the software defaults?
I'm all for the user education thing...I've barked on about it many times.
My concern was defaulting the "feature" ON, when the user may not have a
clue just how aggressive it can be if someone is driving around a city.
(it's especially entertaining if he/she is lost)
I still don't understand why every turn needs to be reported (I think even
wb4apr went on about this one time). It looks like a poor use of available
channel time to me....but that's just an opinion like any other.
Corner pegging makes the implications from all of the prior discussion about
paths, dupes, new digi paradigms, etc., even worse in terms of channel
utilization....and why? What is the real benefit of transmitting every turn?
So it looks neat on a map?
I'm not saying no one should do it. I'm simply mystified as to what the
fascination with it is, given it's potentially greedy nature.
As long as the implementations of it are defaulted OFF, things will probably
be fine. That way, the person doing it has to make a conscious choice to
clutter things up. (and there may be perfectly reasonable grounds for doing
so, I just haven't figured them out yet <g>)
I do find it ironic that one minute we are in a multiple weeks' long
hysterical hand-wringing discussion about aprs being "broken" due to channel
loading, and the next minute new ways to bog the channel down with
meaningless (to me) clutter are being extolled as a virtue. Go figure.

What if we got rid of all the fixed and mobile beacons? Would this
get rid of all of your clutter problems?
I think the way out of this "over-use" problem, is to just get rid of
on-channel digipeaters.

Hasan,
In Search and Rescue applications, tracker teams ALWAYS report a change in
direction. The main reason why is to give the command post the ability to
possibly move other teams around based on information received from the
team on track. Many times an team can be moved to "Cut" or cross a track.
The idea is to reduce the amount of time it takes to find the subject. Now,
do all people need this? No.

Well, I'll add to your facination! I'd like to know when a vehicle has
stopped! I think it would be worth a packet when a vehicle goes from 'x'
speed to 0 (zero speed), it squirts out a packet. Why? How would you know
if the vehicle stopped somewhere quickly and then resumed the same exact
course? Right now, you have no way of knowing. You would not be able to
tell within an intersection, if a vehicle stopped or continued through the
interection until it's next transmission. Of course, corner pegging would
tell you which way it turned immediately. If you were chasing this vehicle
or merely following it, without corner pegging, you would have to stop at
the intersection and wait for the next transmission to know which way to
go!
