In view of the fact that Microsoft is dropping all support for Win 98 in Jan
04, it might just be the time to jump to XP!

Can someone send me the link for the Digitraveler modification to provide
power over the serial cable? I can't seem to find it, and Lyris only seems
to go back a month. Any way we can increase that?
I've got four of these things sitting around... I think I'll install one
permanently in the car and free up my Garmin.

Anyone know where to get (or download) a Win98 update/patch disk? The
MicroSoft site is so convoluted I didn't have time to commit suicide today so
I am hoping someone might have a link to it.
Thanks! ;-)

http://w5ac.tamu.edu/~kj5o/digi_traveler_mod.html
is the one I made. I haven't updated the page, but another reader mentioned
that replacing the jumper from pin4 to the input of the 7805 with a diode
(bar at the 7805 end) would allow you to put the batteries in the thing also
so that the GPS Almanac memory is kept intact across external-power
applications.

I don't have the link, but I DO have a couple of the things and have looked
into doing it.
2 ways...
If you take it apart, you'll see that there evidently USED to be a
configuration where power was fed up a now unused wire in the cable. Parts
are not installed on the PCB. One option is to feed +12v up that, and take
that over to the output of the FWB through a 78L05 or similar.
The other option is to just feed +12v up the RX dat line. Since that is
actually used to turn the thing on, and +12v is within spec. Again, just
put a 78L05 so that the output goes to the (+) output of the FWB.
I haven't done either yet, by the way, so I can't tell you how each work
out.

APRSce works great on my Axim X5 400MHz, even using WiFi to connect to
the internet servers.
Watch out though, you need to filter the data stream as it will overload
the PDA, it just can't keep up with the full feed :-)
Seasons Greetings to all and a happy New Year.
