Ok, so what I get out of this is that 'gravity wave' is a descriptive term
for a wave effect caused by gravity, and is NOT related to gravitational
radiation, like gravity waves you get from colliding black holes or closely
orbiting binary stars. I thought it seemed odd that those would cause
mesoscale effects when we've been having to build sophisticated detectors to
prove they exist.

This helps a bit:  http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity_wave

Another approach to the same explanation: A gravity wave is an
oscillation caused by the displacement of an air parcel which is
restored to its initial position by gravity. The lifting force is
buoyancy, while the restoring force is gravity.

Hi all,

I have a TNC2 clone with TAPR firmware in the EPROM. This TNC normally
operates in kiss mode connected to my Linux box wich runs digi_ned and
aprsd. The TNC has a 3.6V battery installed to make sure it stays in kiss
mode even when it is powercycled. Now I would like to be able to configure
this TNC as a standalone RELAY digipeater to be used at Scouting events
where no normal digipeater coverage is.

So what I'm looking for is a quick and easy way to make the TNC switch
from kiss mode to normal mode. The other way is pretty easy but back out
of kiss mode is a real pain. I have seen some info on a modification to
the TNC enabling the operator to reset the TNC via a switch but I can't
find this info anywhere on the web anymore. Or perhaps there's some
software (Linux pref.) wich can do this? Any suggestions are welcome. I
could remove the battery but then the TNC doesn't keep it's settings
anymore when the power goes out so this is not my preffered solution.

Thanks,

Leaving KISS mode requires that a KISS frame be sent with an 0xFF in
it. So the following should work... though I've not tested it.

Use a binary editor to make a file that has just 3 bytes in it:

0xC0  0xFF  0xC0  (these correspond to decimal values 192, 255, 192).  Then
use a terminal program to send the data to the TNC. It will interpret it
as a KISS frame that will turn off KISS mode. You could alternatively
pretty easily write this as a program rather than using a terminal program
to send it.

I've attached a 3 byte file called "KISSOFF.DAT" that contains these three
bytes.

No need to fire up a terminal program even... just be sure you kill
kissattach first, then use 'cp kissoff /dev/ttyS0' to copy the file to the
serial port. Substitute your serial port for ttyS0, of course. That way
you can do the switch from a shell script.

I wonder if there is any aprs dos software for the HP 95lx. Thanks k0tmu

Can an Expert on Key-chain type Jump Drives educate me:

1) Someone surprised me by plugging in his jump drive to my Windows
98 laptop and it worked!

2) So, being cheap, I went out and bought a 64Meg jump drive and it didn't
work. Said my laptop needed a driver.

3) My cheap 64M is a version 1.1. But the one the other guy used was
probably a version 2.0 jump drive. I guess someone had previously loaded
a 2.0 jump driveer on my laptop (I get them used, legacy unknown)...

QUESTION: So that is the question. Do 1.1 jump drives need a different
driver from 2.0 jump drives? If so, having this 1.1 is practically
useless if I have to also carry around a driver to load on every PC that I
want to use it on...

On the last orbit, PCsat held its command load and as of 1800z or so
today, 15 Dec, had gone for 170 minutes without losing power. This means
she is probably good for the next 2 weeks.

Satgates, "start your engines"...

USERS: Go easy on her 'till Thursday to give her time to charge up well
before giving her a full load... But she will be in good shape to support
mobile ops during the holiday travel season!

Enjoy!

There's no real client program but there are some applications worth
experimenting with.

APRSDos, even without KISS mode. :-(, works ok on the HP100 or HP200 with
their standard size CGA display. The HP95 has a half size display.

I've been running NosAPRS (it uses KISS mode) on my HP100. It has some
APRS functionality. The challenge here is that the APRS is more of a
server and less of a client. We (Hi Maiko) need to separate out the client
and server functionality. Then we'll be able to expand on what the client
can do and make it better. Currently it's smart enough to list APRS
stations and has a fairly trick messaging mode.

  http://www.qsl.net/ve4klm/packet/aprss.html

The other option I'm looking forward to trying on the HP95 is xrouter.
Again I believe this is more of a server solution.

  http://www.g8pzt.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/software/routfeat.htm

APRS features on Xrouter page:

  * MHeard can display APRS position, distance and heading.
  * APRS generic digipeating (RELAY, WIDE, TRACE, TRACEn-N and WIDEn-N)
  * Maintains APRS "Best DX" list.
  * Decodes MIC-E packets.
  * Integral APRS Packet <> Internet gateway.
  * Integral APRS messaging shell.
  * Integral APRS server.
  * APRS "digipeating" via Netrom.
  * Responds to APRS / UI-View queries.
  * ID may be beaconned via digipeaters.
  * Ports may be configured for "APRS-only" use.

How this would work as a "client" I don't know - yet..

HTH.

I'd install X1J node software in the TNC. It provides the
basic KISS mode functionality AND gives you 3 or 4 aliases
for standard digipeating.
