I have tried UI-Weather and with my WS-2310 is works except for the wind
gust value which is always incorrect. Right now (and this is typical)
UI-Wx shows a wind gust of 29 MPH but the Heavy Weather beta 2.0 and the
WX station display both show a max gust for the past 2 days of 22.8 and
for the past 10 minutes the wind speed has not gone above 4 MPH. I don't
know if the data format of the WS-2310 is the same as the WS-2300, maybe
that is what causes this problem with displaying the wind gust. I just
noticed that my indoor humidity is 29%, I wonder if UI-Weather is
reading this instead of the gust speed, I will have to watch and see if
the two values track together as the wind gust has always been in the
same range as indoor humidity. The wind gust value passed on to UI-View
is correct so it appears this only affects wind gust value displayed in
the UI-Weather window.
Also, UI-Weather (on my system anyway) does not restore from the tray
icon correctly.
If I minimize UI-Weather and then go to restore it the window does not
come to the foreground, it restores but its underneath whatever other
window (UI-View or another program running) is currently the foreground
window. And a right-click on the tray icon does not bring up a menu like
most other tray apps do, you have no Restore/Exit option available, you
have to restore it to shut down, but this is a minor inconvenience.
Heavy Weather (and the beta 2.0 version) are locked using the European
date format, so for us Yankees it can be confusing to read the dates in
the history table when the day is less than or equal to 12 and the month
is also <= 12 (i.e. 10.12.03 or 11.04.03). While the rest of the world
may prefer this format it is confusing when some of your (not Andy's)
software shows the date in one format and other software uses another.
UI-Weather does translate the date into DDD dd mmm yyyy format correctly
(07.12.03 is displayed as Sun 07 DEC 2003).
Also, I don't know if it is UI-Weather or Heavy Weather beta that does
not flush the memory it consumes while running or if it leaves some
piece loaded but my computer never recovers resources to the level it
was before these two apps were running. With UI-View32 and UI-NWS
running on my 1.0 GHz P-III w/512 MB RAM free system resources are at
74%. Once I load Heavy Weather beta 2.0 and UI-Weather this drops to
54%. If I then quit (normally) UI-Weather and Heavy Weather beta system
resources will never go back above 58% until I reboot. I don't see a
problem like this with any other software that I run on this computer.
All in all Andy's software is great for bringing WX data from the Ls
Crosse WX stations into UI-View32, and I continue to use it, just have
to reboot to regain resources after I close it and Heavy Weather beta
down and remember to Alt-TAB to bring the window to the foreground when
restoring from a minimized condition.

Hi Bob
Thanks for the detailed feedback. The wind gust value is not available
direct from the heavy weather software because of this I swapped it for the
indoor humidity value. You can download the updated skin here
http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/uiwxskin1_ws2300.zip
Although the wind gust is not available from the heavy weather software (via
the import or from the currdat.lst file explicitly). I have calculated the
value for use with UI-View.
The minimise from system tray is something I have tried fixing to no avail.
The workaround is to double click the icon then say click on UI-View then
click on UI-Weather and it will be in the foreground. UI-Weather will
automatically close down when you close UI-View32
Not sure on the memory usage: Does it always level off at a certain value or
does it increase on memory usage as time goes on?

What was the deal with the NWS APRS packet stations during the SRD? Out of
about 9 of them that could be seen on the APRS-IS, only 2 of them worked
consistently enough to be usable! I watched bulletins fly by all day asking
for check ins but could not get acks back to save my life!

Howdy,
New to HF etc etc
What is the best BALUN to run for a 468/f MHz dipole ?
I have seen choke baluns and ferrite core baluns.
I am thinking I need to go get some pvc pipe and rap coax around it ??

About 6-10 loops of coax in a 6-8 inch dia. loop. Tape in 4 places or
so and strain relieve to make sure it stays a choke.
Or you can get a W2AU commercial balun and enjoy about the same results.

I've been using a table-based CCITT CRC generator for the OpenTracker's FCS
calculation, but I know there's a simpler bit-at-a-time implementation that
doesn't need table lookups. I've looked at the implementation in SOTT and
the one in GPS-E that it was adapted from, but I'm not familliar with PIC
assembly and I'm not sure I've got it. It looks something like this:
Start with 0xffff
For each bit
Rotate CRC right 1 bit
If bit = 1, exclusive-or CRC with 0x8408
Invert CRC and send
Can anyone tell me if that's right, or am I missing something?
Thanks.

Here is something I am using in my 18F452 based 900mhz Xemics FH transceiver:
Seems to work. What is the status with your beta test?
/***************************************************************************
**
** This code comes from
<http://www.eagleairaust.com.au/code/crc16.htm>.
** The crc value needs to be initialized before the first call.
**
** Typical usage:
**
** crc = CRC_INIT;
** for (i = 0; i < length; i++)
** {
** crc = crc_ccitt(crc, buffer[i]);
** }
**
***************************************************************************/
// Update the CRC for transmitted and received data using
// the CCITT 16bit algorithm (X^16 + X^12 + X^5 + 1).
u16 crc_ccitt(u16 crc, u8 byte)
{
crc = (u8)(crc >> 8) | (crc << 8);
crc ^= byte;
crc ^= (u8)(crc & 0xff) >> 4;
crc ^= crc << 12;
crc ^= (crc & 0xff) << 5;
return(crc);
}

On my D700's, I splice a tiny DC connector pigtail onto the D700's pigtail
(so that it goes with the radio) and then I can plug my GPS into that
small pigtail.
