Walt-
Here's what I do to handle the PM's. Using the software I set up the
radio the way I want for a PM, transfer it to the radio & then save it
to the appropriate PM. I do this for each PM saving the file on my PC
under a name with the PM no. in it & also in the remarks space in the
program. I haven't tried it yet, but I feel certain you could retrieve
each PM and then transfer it to your PC & save the file as above. I run
with automatic PM save OFF on the radio. It's not as convenient as if
the software retrieved & saved them all, but it's a lot better then
doing them all by hand.

Yeah - this would be very easy to do. Send me the shapefile and once the
main db.aprsworld.net server is back online (early next week) it will be
done in no time. I already generate daily statistics for states and
countries.

As the person who handles all the registrations and most of the e-mail
directed to APRSWXNET/CWOP, let me provide an indirect answer to Ralph's
questions above. During the past 3 days I have registered two NWS lead
forecasters (one from California and one from Michigan) as CW members of
CWOP. Both were anxious to send their home weather station data to
findu.com and on to CWOP so the data could be in the operational data stream
they view everyday. Another message was from an NWS Warning Meteorologist
in Montana asking how he could get more of the APRS weather stations into
the CWOP data set. I told him to send me the callsigns and I'd get them
registered. The fourth e-mail was one with an invitation to give a
presentation on CWOP at an NWS workshop next summer, which I gladly
accepted. In addition, I work closely with Dave Helms, CW0351, a
meteorologist at NWS Headquarters. Dave designed and developed the CWOP
logo and the "CWOP info" link that you can see here www.wxqa.com So, the
NWS knows about and uses the APRS weather reports.
I'd also like to comment on units of measurement. All of the APRS weather
data that goes from findu.com to the NWS (and many other users) goes through
the MADIS program. When Steve Dimse and I were doing the work to get the
data into MADIS, we used a MADIS feature that matches units from our data
stream to what the NWS wants. So there is no reason for anyone to ever ask
if our on-the-air units are what the NWS wants. MADIS makes it so. As long
as you use degrees from true north, miles per hour, degrees F, hundredths of
inches, millibars and %, the NWS will get your data in the units they want.

Yes, the data is archived by MADIS and was available for this request

Here's a listing of the 187 different mesonets that form the operational
surface data set for all of the NWS Weather Forecast Offices in the Western
Region. Note that APRSWXNET/CWOP is the third largest after the National
Weather Service and the Bureau of Land Management.

Thanks for the comments, Jim. Also, thanks for the data from your three
weather stations in Arizona.

Jim, I've emailed the file off sig. The original source is
http://www.bts.gov/gis/download_sites/ntad02/newusdownloadform.html and has
a number of other layers Xastir users might find useful. Or do any other
APRS apps support ArcView shapefiles?
