I could be swayed to use it for some purposes. Likewise, I do know of one
or two people in our area using it. Answer, Yes.

Double excellent. The aprsd server on a floppy would welcome an APRS GUI
on a floppy.

My vote is yes. However, what's the minimum "laptop" this will run on
and how much ram do you envision needing (in particular with the maps
loaded)? I'd probably setup a "togo" system with an old Zenith laptop I
have, PK-12 and Icom u2-AT radio.
Cheers,
Sean...

Maybe I don't understand the question properly.
I have several disks made up with Club Callsigns (registered to the club
and validation#) for various events, etc. I used 8.51 and stripped
out the extraneous (for my purposes) files. Use them for plug and go
for other people's laptops during public service events. I had no
problems creating them and getting the floppies bootable.
Are you talking about an APRS DOS "lite" (Home ;-)version? It might be
useful if I could hand it out to people, let them put their own calls in
for events and such, and keep in their call out kits. Maybe entice them
into registering and getting the "pro" version with full features?
I am in full agreement with using DOS version on old equipment. My home
station is running APRS MAX on a 486-66 tower with 16mb of
non-upgradeable RAM that used to be server at a former employer (were
throwing it out after an upgrade). Been chugging along for over 5 years
now with no problem. Just have to purge the Log files once a year or so
to avoid Disk Full errors.
I have 2 or 3 486 laptops (some monochrome) that I use for public
service events, both for my own mobile, and loaners. Even have a
Citadel running APRS Touch.
For my purposes, I'd really like to see GPS and DF functions retained in
the "Lite" version. And any possibility in adding SmartBeacon? (would
also like to see it for the full registered version!).
If it would help, I have the 8.51 downloaded program files, would they
be useful for you to de-compile and get the source that way (I am NOT a
programmer, so please overlook any ignorance in that offer!)
