With the KPC-3 you can set different paths, each with different timing.
One can be Relay,WIDE,WIDE
Another Wide3-3
Another Relay,WIDE,WIDE2-2
You can set the more aggressive Paths with to beacon less often. These
Paths are not a suggestion for you only an example. Your mileage may vary.
Where I travel Relay,WIDE or WIDE2-2 is plenty. With different Paths in
the tracker you can check to see which Path worked best and adjust the next
time. Half the fun of a tracker is adjusting the Paths. Sometimes I will
only set "DIRECT" as a Path to check out the range of my Home Station.
Check out http://www.theworks.com/~wa6ylb/tracker.txt or
http://www.dididahdahdidit.com/kpctracker.php
I now use a tinytrak, because I got tired of turning off the tracker every
time I stopped. There is no use beaconing at a high rate if you are
stopped. Other emails you can get is if you set your beacon rate too high.
Forget the nasty emails, learn and have fun.

Hi All,
I have successively ran a KPC3+ for over 2 years now using the "clear"
function after each BLT with the exception of the last one. I have
somethin like this:
BLT
1 EVERY 00:01:30 CLEAR Primary position string report rate, empty buffer
after sending
2 EVERY 00:20:00 Secondary position string report rate3
3 EVERY 00:00:00
4 EVERY 00:30:00
All one has to do to beacon at the BLT 4 rate, every 30 minutes,
interrupt the GPS input to the tnc with a reed relay connected to the
ignition. When the iginition is on, the reed is pulled in and gps input
fills the buffers and thus beaconing resumes at the moving rate.
The down side to this is that the KPC3+, GPS, and Radio remain on during
the "parked" position. I have left the car over night and all day, (at a
motel), and not loose the battery.. Your milage may vary...

I did something similar but hooked the GPS up to power through
the ignition switch. Then when the car was off, the TNC and radio
were on, but the GPS was off. Less current pulled from the
battery and only beacons at a very conservative resting rate.

Oh, and FINDU is not my target at all. It does such a fantastic job! It
is the "STRATEGIC" arm of APRS. I do not expect it to do the "tactical
real-time" stuff that I find missing in so many of the field client
programs...
So my "suggestions" for all that many client programs are missing are not
at all directed at FINDU or any of Steve's efforts. Its just that he
represents a pretty big "target" and is good at debating the other side of
the issues... Bob

I had no goal. I had a feeling that you were trying to speak for me, and I
did not choose to participate in your statement.

The world is round. Is that opinion or fact? The speed of light is 3
million meters/sec. Is that opinion or fact? Well, both depend on your
level of exactness.
In this forum, I think your assertiveness pushes the limits of many peoples
patience. I'd suggest that part of the reason is that you don't include
the 'In my opinion" phrase enough of the time and thus we are forced to
believe or argue about things that don't need time spent on.

Bob is not in control of your actions. Bob is not in control of your
thoughts. Those are your own to do with as you will. All of us can benefit
from knowing more about tatical system operations. Please try and consider
everyones needs here. People need to learn. Some of the APRS users leave
this list because of the fighting that is started by extreme positions that
differ from Bob's. There is room for differing opinions, but there is an
overriding need for a communications forum where people learn from those
differing opinions, instead of being made uncomfortable with the group of
people that have them...

I don't necessarily agree with Bob's use of color for symbols, but the fact
is we do need a much richer display capability. The symbol system for
OpenTrac is inspired by MIL STD 2525B. The actual symbols used by that
standard are kind of obscure, but the concept is sound. See examples at
http://gsd.ms.northropgrumman.com/About/about.html#MIL_STD_2525_ScreenShot
and http://www.objectraku.com/war_symbology/02war_symbology.html.
I think color should be reserved for indicating unit affiliation - maybe not
'friendly' and 'hostile' in the case of APRS (one would hope), but to
separate SAR units from fire units from uninvolved bystanders, for example.
Message capability could be a simple modifier attached to the symbol.
Bitmapped icons just don't cut it.

I've got a MFJ-1270 with UIDigi firmware that I want to use as a
"mobile/tactical" digipeater.
My question is, is there a pin on the 25pin serial port that is pulled to
ground level when the tnc is powered on by chance? If not does anyone
happen to know where I could find a "ground at power on" source on the tnc
board that I could use? I'm sure I can find one but would be nice if
someone already knew to save time.
My idea is to use it in conjunction with a TinyTrak3, so during normal
operation the Tinytrak alone would be a vehicle tracker, but can also
beacon the variable position of the digi when in use. If I can find a
source for "ground with power on only" then I can rig up a "Y" cable for
the radio port to switch the TinyTrak into it's secondary configuration to
beacon the digipeater information only when the tnc is actually turned
on. I already have all of the wiring issues figured out except for an
automatic/easy way to change configurations. The less switches and/or
additional parts involved the better. ;)
