There does exist, an open source TNC.
http://users.rcn.com/carlott/atmega-tnc.html
The source code is well written, and can be updated/upgraded pretty much at
will. The code could also be ported into a Mega-128 for access to huge
external ram. I am currently running 128k and 512k sram in these parts, in
another project. The M128 is not available in DIP, but this is not a huge
problem.

I never got any useful information from this query:
How does one wire an IC-746 for VHF Packet?
I have the HF wired, and getting full output but VHF is wired through ACC
#2 & you have to key the signal from a completly separate connector. NO
one has ever self wired one of these? Just wondering what kinda' wire u
used? & what was your configuration?

Well, I just finished changing over my mobile so the TNC gets discriminator
output. Thanks to Gale Wilkinson, KC4PL, I was able to move the jumper so
my KPC-3 (not plus... but that's another discussion!) can use discriminator
output. That part is working fine.
However, the entire reason for my desire to do this isn't working. I had
hoped that the discriminator would send audio to the TNC regardless of the
CTCSS setting, so I could use Bob's Voice Alert idea. Unfortunately, when
the CTCSS has the audio muted, nothing goes to the TNC, either.
Transceiver is a Yaesu FT-1500. I changed the PRATE setting to 9600, but
it didn't help. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Earl

Uhhhh, who's a bigger company: PC manufacturer's or Microsoft ?
Hardware is like a tool box, It's worthless with tools (software).
I am done with this thread.

Well, the answer to that is to stop dealing with the commercial market,
whenever possible. The open source movement fits well with the ham
philosophy - there's a good reason Linux has had AX.25 support since the
earliest versions.
I've spent quite a bit of time developing the OpenTracker, and yet I don't
plan to make any money from it. One of the main features that sets it apart
from the commercial TT3 is the ability to upload new firmware in the field -
firmware that I'll provide for free, or that you can write and upload
yourself if you're so inclined.
Decreasing demand for ham gear is going to marginalize a lot of products.
It's only going to be through initiatives like the GNU Radio project that
we're ever going to be able to take back the hobby from corporations whose
primary interest is their bottom line - and that bottom line doesn't leave
room for low-end products. It's been economics and technology that have
driven the hobby from one of home-brew electronics to one of fancy
multi-thousand dollar toys. The open source movement has shown us there's
another way economically (and in no other area does that philosophy fit
better than it does in amateur radio), and software-based radios are
bringing the technology back within reach of amateurs.
I say we do Kantronics a favor, and let them get out of an unprofitable
market segment that's obviously requiring too much of their resource to
support.

You obvisouly are not pulling the audio off the discriminator, then!

Matthew,
Hmmm, very amusing. About five days ago I sent you instructions for wiring
your 746, to which you replied with something not very nice. So, yes, you
did get a response.
But, perhaps I was unclear in my last message. Virtually ALL Icom radios
use the same pin-outs, thus, the 746 and 746PRO would have the SAME pinouts.
In fact, the 706, 731, 735, and 746PRO all use the same connector, as I have
personally used the same cable for every one of these radios. So, it
follows that the 746 would also. The following is more explicit
instructions on wiring:
If you'd like to use the fancy 13 pin din which I am not positive your does,
you can use:
http://users3.ev1.net/~medcalf/ztx/wire/i13pin.html
or if you'd prefer to use the 7 or 8 pin DIN's which are shared amongst a
lot of radios, you can go to:
http://users3.ev1.net/~medcalf/ztx/hf2tnc.html
or you can use the microphone connector:
http://users3.ev1.net/~medcalf/ztx/wire/i8pin.html
We're all here to be helpful.

Nice answer -- I'm taking the 9600 BPS audio from the data plug on the back
of the '1500. Isn't that generally agreed to be discriminator output?

Does anyone know of a source for this GPS or a similar one that does not
bundle software? I don't want to buy the Street finder package. It is a
real shame that they don't seem to be selling the GPS plain.
