Sanity alert: Here's a fella that "get's it". It'a about conveying useful
information via RF...to the RF users.

This is a good start:
>KC4ZGQ-2
>Status: Three hops will cover most of Georgia. Please set path accordingly. 73

I would suggest being more explicit. RELAY,RELAY,RELAY to a newbie would
fulfill the above direction. :) I'd suggest instead:

Status: RELAY,WIDE,WIDE for mobiles, WIDE3-3 for home stations. TXD 100ms
for everyone. Please setup accordingly. 73!

Such a station in every LAN would do wonders over time. Well done, John!

TXD has to be determined according to the radio you're using.
Some won't go with less than 200, others are ok at <100.

What I do, is test against the local digi, and shorten it till the digi
can't hear me, then add 25-50%, depending on granularity.

Ok, being Kenwood protective, try this on for size (I don't own a Kenwood,
so my assumptions may not be correct, ymmv):

KC4ZGQ-2>APND0X,WIDE,qAo,KC4ZGQ-10:!3257.84ND08348.48W#Mob:R,W,W Base:W3-3
ALL:TXD 100ms. Preferred Macon APRS UNPROTO LAN settings.

+---------------+
  ## KC4ZGQ-2
     Mob:R,W,W
     Base:W3-3
+---------------+

It's more specific and informative. Would that work?

I might be missing something here. How is changing from a BLN to a status
message going to lighten the load on the network? I'm in on the idea in a
minute if someone can explain this one to me.

Thought the group would be interested in this communication I had with Sean
who opened an i-gate in the Landmark area, filling a big hole in that area.

Greg,

Thanks! Glad to hear folks are finding it useful. I recently enabled inet-
to-RF gating for local stations, which should help cover 395 from
Landmark down to Springfield, and I-95 from the wilson bridge to the
mixing bowl. Still don't have the greatest antenna placement in the world
but it works ok.

Always glad to help, please let me know if there is anything I should
change or add.

OK, so I send the status message or beacon or whatever that causes the
Kenwood to display this message. Not owning a Kenwood I don't know but
what happens when the next packet comes along? Does this message disappear
from the screen?

I can't seem to find much on coverage on Kauai. I'm traveling there for
a week and would like to take a portable set up along. It would be fun
of course if there is an Igate there and my info gets home as well.

Thanks,
