Subject: An idea, or do they have this already?

I came across the idea that I saw from the big M the other day and
wanted to know if it could be adapted to ham radio. What I was thinking
was a small box, with the GPS and a tiny trak all ready to plug into the
radio. The box would be small enough to attach to the side of the radio
and take up no more space than about 1in square. The unit would plug
into the jacks on the radio like a speaker mic. Programming would be by
program like tiny trak with a kenwood style plug for programing the
TH-D7A. Power would be drawn by a CR-123A Li-Ion battery. A short
antenna would be for GPS, maybe about .25-1.0 in tall. Does this sound
crazy or have they done it already?

No it doesn't sound crazy. It may be the best idea to come across this
sig in a long time.

I'll eventually be doing a surface mount version of my tracker. For
something that size, it'd have to have the GPS chipset integrated on the
board, though. Plus a patch or helix antenna. How long is a CR123A going
to run that? That should be about the equivalent of two AAs.

I'd rather have the whole thing built into a nice speaker mic.

Well, I went and jinxed us - said my neighborhood was safe from the fire...

My neighborhood IS the Dulin Fire now. At about noon they evacuated us,
but we are now allowed back in...for the moment. Two slurry bombers and a
heli are working the area. Many thanks to the CDF. I was able to find
them quickly on the THD-7A on 151.220 and 151.280. I have not lived in
San Diego long enough to have programmed the local freq's in. but you can
bet I'll do it ASAP now.

I would also like to stress how important it is to have a "go kit" - from
the time the fire was spotted to the time they ordered us out was less than
20 minutes. Sad to report that this fire was probably arson. A white
Hummer H2 with KC lights on a light bar was seen speeding from the point of
origin, and authorities are asking us if we know who owns it... There is
another big fire (not being fought) two miles east of us.

I've also been told that national news is only reporting on the LA Fires,
but I assure you a big portion of San Diego County is in flames right
now. Thousands of people have lost their homes and they say we may not
see major containment for up to two weeks. All schools are closed and
they are urging people not to go to work and to stay off the roads. This
is really big.

I am building a really small (and tightly packed) box from Fry's that has
the Deluo and TinyTrak3 together taking up so little space with a 9v
battery AND my alinco and a 1.2ahour battery and charger. With the Deluo
being so small, we're almost already there.

My Astron 35a supply did the same thing, blew fuses... here is what I found:

In the 35A supply, Astron uses TWO full wave bridge rectifiers, both are
rated at 25A , but what they do is run one side of the transformer thru one
bridge and the other side of the transformer thru the opposite side, which
in effect makes it 1/2 of 35A thru the 25A bridge....

One bridge shorted... I replaced BOTH with 30A 600V bridges.

If memory serves the CR-123A is 3V 1300Ah that should give the same life
span as about two AA's and take up LESS space.

The PBS Newshour definitely emphasized the San Diego fires as being the
biggest and had a ten minute interview with the SD mayor.

Wow, that must make keeping up with email easy for you. You just delete
everything older than 5 miniutes. A great workload filter...

Oh, so you will throw away a good message just because you werent there
to read it when it came in? Wow... it is short-sighted thinking like that
that totally undermines the integrity of a communications system...

Well, I dont like your shove it up your a$$ attitude, but if that's what
floats your boat, then nothing I say will convince you otherwise.

Rest assured at least the folks looking at Firenet are getting an idea of
the intensity or magnitude of the area involved!
The MODIS data is painting a fair picture of the area for all the fires in
your area.

Be safe!

Subject: The point is NOT use of BLN, it's RF User Education

If BLN: makes it "SPAM" to a Kenwood, and there are thousands of Kenwoods
in use out there, then refocus on the intent (RF-based user education) and
abandon the idea of using BLN.

I've already suggested the use of a simple periodic MSG (even a status text
would work) to deliver the "preferred UNPROTO" to RF users, but somehow you
keep returning to the use of BLN and villifying the whole idea of using RF
to help RF users. The point is RF-based user education, the rest is
unimportant and quite negotiable.

To answer your question (something that I've done twice before, by the way)
about dumb trackers... someone is watching them. While you may not reach
the tracker itself, the "owner" will eventually see the RF messages and,
being a good network neighbor, comply...because we are Amateur Radio
operators. That's what we do.

Ev, W2EV
