I'm not sure what the 'max timeout' is on my IIIc, but I an set it to
disable the timeout completely when it's in the cradle. Maybe it's just
that when I use the 'hotsync' cable to link to the GPS it thinks it's in
the cradle.
On the other hand, it's new. So when I play with it, I'm constantly
playing with the maps. I don't know if it will time out or not!
You know, I'll have to play and find out...

Yea. There are freeware apps out on the 'net that will take care of
this. I used to have one or two of them. They should be easy to
find.

Interesting. I had Solus 2.0 already purchased, so use that with this and
several other GPSs. The maps come from Street Atlas 9. With Solus, as long
as it is active, the Palm IIIxe stays powered up.

Dale,
I used mine in the car and it never turned off the whole time.. Maybe
something in the program or OS isn't set for continuos operation?

Don't know about the Palm IIIxe, but with my Palm Tungsten T, the unit
stays on as long as it is running the mapping application, even thought
it does shut itself off after a few minutes on other applications. This is
using the DeLorme XMap Street Atlas, Handheld Edition, that came
with the Digitraveler. You might check with Palm about which bit
(if any) to tickle to get the unit to stay on. Might also look into getting
the latest version of the Palm OS that is available for the IIIxe.
Good luck.

Most applications don't mess with the timer, 'cuz they don't want to be the
cause of you losing all your data when the batteries run out.
"AlwaysOn" is a free palm app that I've used before to keep the unit on:

Is the link in the docs that came with it.

I turned on Solus basic. It still turns off. I have v-4 software.
After playing with the maps it does not seem very useful anyway.

I've put Slackware on 10MB before on a laptop. I added X11 to it and kept
it under 20MB.
There are special tiny distributions of Linux for embedded applications,
and flash filesystems which will walk the writes across the disk, extending
its life (I still wouldn't use it for /tmp, /var/tmp, or swap though!).

Yeah, I've seen a number of distributions that'll work just fine in under 8
megs. Flash is fairly cheap though, and I'd rather be able to log into the
box, do package management, and compile stuff locally. Having 128 or 256
megs available gives you a lot more elbow room.
My box is doing just fine with no swap configured. I might have to see if I
can find a utility to analyze disk access - I've got the 'mark' feature
turned of in syslog, and it doesn't seem to do much writing to disk, but I'd
hate to wear a hole in the flash beacuse I overlooked a log or a semaphore
file. Even with a purpose-built flash filesystem it'd be best to minimize
write activity.

I loaded Always on. will try it later. Any body know if there is a way
to feed 3 volts up one of the wires in the cable. I made a 3 volt

I just ran an experiment.
I set my timeout to 30 seconds.
With one exception, at all times the unit will power off in 30 seconds
without touching the screen or a button.
The exception is if the GPS is tracking.
So, either the Palm senses the serial I/O activity, or it has something in
the program that tickles a 'keep alive' bit whenever the GPS is running
and transmitting data.
