If only we could have bit level timing matches like the paging networks...
My good friend, KB5ZVC can tell you how long it takes RF to go an enumerable
number of distances which he has memorized because he has to make his paging
network 'work'. We are not so bothered...

Could someone post the xxxxxxxxxxx catalog
number(s) for these units again? I'd like to look
around for them in my neighborhood.
Thanks

Well, the better question is, can we make it work with less work on the
operators part?
I doubt that digined has much in the way of memory requirements. Looking
over Henk's pages last night, it will run on a 286 w/ DOS. It can't be
all that bad. For comparison, I crammed aprsd onto a floppy running
linux, the minimum memory requirement being 12 megs of ram.
Given the discussion about moving to a PC based digi, I was wondering if
this is something we should take a look at. With the cost of CF sticks
and the ability to pop those into IDE adapters it would be nothing to put
digined onto a CF running linux and use an old 486 or low end pentium.
The question becomes, what interface to use. Henk, can digined use the
soundcard TNC under linux or do we need an external device. If we look at
it from the floppy angle then we're talking one, maybe two soundcards
being supported at most (kernel bloat with each soundcard). What about an
external TNC, maybe a KISS type? What about something like this?
http://www.john.hansen.net/PICTNC.htm
I'm open to suggestions and willing to do some development on this. The
only bad part about floppies is that they're not reliable, especially at
some of the repeater sites I've been to (dust, heat). However, they're
dirt cheap. CF stuff is getting pretty cheap and the nice part is an
upgrade is only a CF switch away.
I've figured out how to get aprsd crammed onto a linux bootable floppy and
make it such that anyone can deploy a reliable igate with very little
work. If we can come to some sort of consensus in terms of a hardware
platform development should not take long.

Forget floppies... too constrained and unreliable. Though I do have a
couple of 2.88 meg drives around... no floppies for them, though.
Nah, just go with CF or even a USB flash drive.. I think the newer BIOSes
can boot from those. The Soekris boards have built-in flash support. 32
and 64 meg units are cheap, and that's plenty of room for a basic Linux
load, digi software, drivers, and logs.
I'd still like to see a simple DSP board with either PCI or USB interface
that'd take the place of the soundcard interface and include such things as
PTT controls. And hopefully offload some processing from the CPU.
We need something like the Linux Router Project... make a simple distro that
works with a specified set of hardware, and keep the required configuration
to a minimum.

I picked up one of the DigiTravler GPS's and made a cable for the laptop,
but I would like to make the PDA work too...
The PDA is a Sony Clie SL20. I have a serial cable that is made for hot sync
via a serial port, so I took that connector and made up a GPS to PDA cable
using pins 2,3 and 5... well, this will not cause the GPS to start.
Inside the PDA connector, they used pins 2,3,4,5 and 7+8 and there is a
board that LOOKS like a serial to TTL converter.
Anyone got a suggestion???

I think this may be overkill for this application. I recall seeing some
utilities that will emulate DOS on a Pocket PC and actually allow some DOS
programs to run on Pocket PCs if they don't have extraordinary
requirements; i.e. no direct writes into video memory, no direct
bypass-the-OS direct access to serial port control registers, text-only--no
VGA graphics, etc.
I suspect that since Digi-ned listens to and talks to a TNC connected to a
serial port and doesn't do anything fancy with the video console, it might
actually be usable as-is in a Pocket PC under a DOS emulator.
Most Pocket PCs have slots that acccept standard compact flash cards that
are now running at $40-45 for 256MB ( that's FIVE-to-TEN times the size of
the typical hard disks on early '286s! ) and always have a standard serial
port [with a non-standard connector].
If not, the source code of DigiNed could probably be easily reworked to
conform with the limitations of the Pocket PC under simulated DOS. This
would still require an external KISS TNC, but this could be one of the
published dirt-cheap KISS-only units instead of an expensive KPC3+.
This would give us a digipeater controller package considerably easier to
update/modify than a KPC+ at the same or lower cost, and with only
slightly higher power consumption (Pocket PC consumes about 5W -- 5VDC at
about 1 A)
Just some thoughts...
