I have had some success.
Tonight a friend brought over a generic serial-to-USB cable to try on my
system. I uninstalled the Targus USB port replicator and installed this
cheap no-name cable.
After rebooting the machine I have been able to connect to upgrade the ROM
on my Garmin Legend as well as to connect to MS Streets (2004) and get a fix
on our position.
It looks like the computer connection question has been solved.
Next I need to order my TinyTracker and get my rig.
Again, thanks to everyone for their answers to a beginner's questions.

Gents,
I am feeling very dumb today I need some help with this PERL code.
STRING = CALLSIGN>DEST,DIGI,DIGI,DIGI:PAYLOAD
I am trying to get: CALLSIGN, DEST, (digis), PAYLOAD
Code:-
@callsign = split />/;
@payload = split/:/;
@dest = split /[>,]/;
@digis = < this is the bit i am having probs with >
I know I have to split on ">" then split on ":" then remove first member.
example
A>B,C,D,E,F:G
split ">"
B,C,D,E,F:G
split ":"
B,C,D,E,F
chomp a value
C,D,E,F (which represents the digis part of the APRS packet )
Cheers

I guess I'm confused here. I don't see where WIDEn-N or RELAY, WIDE
have anything to do with "Smart" or legacy. WIDEn-N was a packet size
reducing mechanism not a smart or modern alias replacement. I think
that something is broken on your digis if it transmits dupes for the
same packet with RELAY, WIDE, and WIDEn-N. Dupe checking should work
regardless of the actual alias used. Consider fixing your digi, don't
break your network by removing the base WIDE or RELAY. Am I incorrect
about this? If I am then our problems are much larger than I even
possibly imagined. I can see 4 promenant digis that run UI-DIGI prom
for TINY-2 clones with my iGate and do not see these type of dupe
problems. Our problems stem from to many dx stations running excessive
paths. WIDEn-N or WIDE or TRACEn-N appear have no affect on the problem

JFindu (live mapping and tracking on the web using javAPRS) has moved to
http://www.jfindu.net
javAPRS is an APRS GUI applet written in Java and runs in most browsers
which have Java enabled. javAPRS provides a real-time display of the
APRS-IS feed.
JFindu makes use of a server based database in conjunction with server
filtered feeds for display. It also has the capability for certain
types of map options to be used behind a firewall. Maps used are
MapBlast maps world-wide and NWS radar .gifs for certain USA display
options.
For further information on javAPRS, javAPRSSrvr, and APRS-IS go to
http://www.aprs-is.net
Enjoy.

Anyone here on the list using one of these HT's (IC-T2H SPORT) for their
tracker... please contact me off list.
I'd like to know how well it works in the role of a basic tracker
xcvr...

I'm sure there's a more clever way of doing this, but...
$string = "CALLSIGN>DEST,DIGI,DIGI,DIGI:PAYLOAD";
($callsign, $rest) = split(/>/,$string,2);
($dest, $rest) = split(/,/,$rest,2);
($digis, $payload) = split(/:/,$rest,2);
@digis = split(/,/,$digis);
print "$callsign\n";
print "$dest\n";
foreach $d (@digis) { print "$d\n" }
print "$payload\n";

Sorry but it is not a "bunch of poop". GPS or as some call it GPRS
capable phones do not necessarly have the ability to be tracked. THE GPS
FEATURE IS ONLY USED WHEN A 911 CALL IS INITIATED and is displayed on
the 911 PSAP screen only. These new "GPS" phones are NOT "APRS" capable
phones.This feature is ONLY available if Phase 2 of 911 has been rolled
out in the area, it is both a project between a carrier and also the
local 911 coordinator.So you may have a GPS phone but it does not mean
that the feature will work depending on where you are.
911 calls are Phase 0 (Location of Cell Site), Phase 1 (Location of Cell
Site and Callers Phone Number), Phase 2 (Location of Cell site, Callers
Number and Lat/Lon) and in the future Phase 3. Not all carriers or 911
centers are capable to do all of these.At this time I do not even know
what Phase 3 will include.
Phase 2 is used in this area but is in the process of going on-line on a
county by county basis. I have not seen a 911 call center that even
knows what Phase 2 is at this time. It is too new and it does not appear
that most of them have had any training on what ANY of these phases
accomplish or how to read their screens.
What you are thinking of is a "On Star" type service, this is not
offered for GPRS phones yet as is with the GM On Star service. That is
more in line with GPS tracking or as some have dubbed "APRS".
How do I know ? I have been doing 911 testing this past week between
00:00 and 5:00. A lot of it has been on the fly training of the poor
dispatcher that answers the phone when I rattle off a bunch of
questions. A minimum of 3 phone calls per cell site, one per sector.Some
carriers have a self imposed requirement of testing each cell 1 time a
year. Our policy is if 911 fails at any site that site must be fixed on
the spot or be taken off the air untill the 911 info appears properly on
the dispatchers screen. 911 is taken VERY seriously for obvious reasons!
