Subject: Is it a radio war again?

Here's just a few snippets from the many I get here.

Is 14.000MHz part of a political radio war ?
--------------------------------------------

Observed by myself and by members of the IARU Monitoring Service it seems
there's a virtual radio war being played out on 14.000Mhz.

Identified warriors battling for supremacy seem to be Isreal with it's
three letter Mossad transmissions, the Korean Embassy in Libya, an
unidentified US Department, Egypt - to name but a few all plonking up
their own data transmissions in whatever format they feel like at the time.

Also observed on the frequency has been Russian language ssb, Brazillian,
African and Spanish voice !

Are there any other notable freq's involved in political radio games ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Lots ! North Korea has been observed broadcasting the works of the "Great
Leader" on well known military and diplomatic freqs is just one recent
example. It reached quite a peak about a year or two ago when there
was pressure on N. Korea to close down nuclear facilities, and when
claiming to have exploded a nuke underground about a year ago.

It's also been reported that North Korea is now broadcasting on the
popular QRP CW freq of 3.560 as of Oct 2007.

And now it's been observed that NATO STANAG transmissions have been
observed using 3.757Mhz, known to many europeans as "The PIP".

A well known Russian military channel marker for many many years.

All part of the diplomatic game of RF ping pong it seems.

Do radio "war games" really exist ?
-----------------------------------

Of course. The jamming wars of the cold war are well known. In recent times
I have observed Iranian broadcasts on Fleet Weather Service WX Fax freq's
as a way of saying "up yours!" to the British.

And up until the 1980's there were even radio wars on the Long Wave
broadcasting frequencies between a Voice of America transmitter in Germany
and Russia.

On the Medium Wave's, AM station's in East Germany transmitted test tones
in Berlin to stop East Germans receiving West German broadcasts.

Anything else going on ?
------------------------

There's a huge amount of information to be gathered on HF.
And it's available NOW !! Real HF listeners can gain a lot of
intelligence about hidden political agenda - but it takes more than a
cursory swich of the VFO over the bands. Signals Intelligence - you bet!
