DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. (We don't always follow along and copy what they
do.)
I noted the comments made by Andy G0FTD in a bulletin under the subject
heading.
He wrote;
__________
" The BBC, *bought and owned* by UK Govt since the 1930's,it's top brass
APPOINTED by UK Govt and it's licence fee set by the UK Govt, a UK statute
law (by the UK Govt) making it a criminal offence not to pay a tv licence
and a govt dept (OFCOM) setting timetables for analogue tx switch off's. "

I can understand his objections to the situation as described by him.
Here in Australia we used to have to pay for both a Broadcast Listeners'
Licence for "radio" and a Television Licence, however, these requirements
were abolished years and years ago. In fact it was so long ago that I had
almost forgotten that such imposts once did exist.
Someone with a very good memory may be able to say just when that change
actually occurred.
I would imagine that if any suggestion was raised here as to re imposing
such a fee there would be almost a blood-bath.
Perhaps our UK friends might consider launching a campaign towards
abolishment. I'm almost sure that it could become a very popular move.
Then again, I am probably getting into a political area and encroaching on
the ability of the "Brits" to manage their own affairs. Doubtless I may
well be howled down as being an interfering colonial.

Ian
