Hello SWLs,
Here is a listed of radio stations registered as operating in the
'Tropical Bands'. These are the bands allocated below 6 MHz and used
mainly in countries with sparse populations spread across large areas.
They tend to be relatively low powered and also often use low
aerial systems designed to give maximum high angle radiation to ensure
that the signal strength is optimum in the target area, up to 200 iles or
so from the transmitter. Consequently these stations are a difficult
'catch' for SWLs in the Northern Hemisphere, but give you a great sense of
acchievement when you identify one! My first one was way back in the late
1950's when I heard Tanganykia, as it was then, closing down for the night
of 5,050 kHz.. I was interested to see that it is still listed below!
Technical advances mean that these stations are a dying breed, so
catch 'em while you can!
